A Pittsburgh restaurant owner blamed COVID Wednesday after he was forced to close his doors due to a persistent labor shortage and other economic woes rooted in the pandemic. 

Cafe Raymond owner Ray Mikesell joined “America’s Newsroom” to discuss the issues he has faced and why he has decided to close his business as a result. 

“They just beat you down, so much that… I don’t have the fight to fight them anymore and try to stay open and hire people,” Mikesell told co-host Dana Perino. “It’s been… almost three years, and I just don’t have it in me anymore at this point in my life. I have a passion for what I do, but I just want to I don’t want to do it this way no more.”

Mikesell blames the pandemic for many of the struggles he faces today as a business owner, citing struggles with the labor shortage all while demand continues to surge. 

“It changed the world, the work ethic for everybody, a lot of young people,” Mikesell said. “I pull my hair out, I can’t hire anybody. It doesn’t matter what you’re paying them or anything of the sort… anybody I do hire, they quit in two days.”

“A lot of people think that I’m not busy,” he continued. “I’m busier than we have ever been with a third of the staff, and there’s times that I have to close down while we’re open in prime business hours. I closed for 20 minutes because we’re out of plates, silverware, everything, coffee cups.”

Mikesell said he will relocate his business to Montana in hopes of finding a new beginning for himself and his family. 

“I get upset when I talk about it because I got my life invested in this,” Mikesell said. “But it is at this level, it’s not worth it. It just goes upon deaf ears when you talk to people.”

A migrant was shot and killed while in custody at the Ysleta Border Patrol station in El Paso, Texas, on Tuesday afternoon, according to officials. 

The person, who was being detained at the station at the time of the shooting, was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries. 

“At approximately 13:00 hours, the FBI El Paso Field Office was contacted by the Ysleta U.S. Border Patrol Station regarding an agent involved shooting involving a person detained at the Station,” said Jeffrey R. Downey, FBI El Paso Special Agent in Charge. “FBI El Paso’s Violent Crime Task Force and Evidence Response Team were deployed to the Station. One person was taken into custody and was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. At this time, the FBI can confirm the person has died from his injuries. The FBI, El Paso Police Department and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Professional Responsibility are actively working the scene at this time. As this is ongoing investigation, no further information can be provided at this time.”

Brandon Judd, a spokesperson for the National Border Patrol Council, told Fox News Digital that the migrant went for an agent’s gun right before the shooting. 

FBI El Paso’s Violent Crime Task Force and Evidence Response Team are investigating the shooting, along with the El Paso Police Department and CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility.

Abortion ranked as most important issue to voters in Michigan, topping inflation and the cost of living, according to a new poll that revealed Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is dominating the state’s gubernatorial race.

A Detroit News/WDIV poll of registered voters in Michigan found that despite the Consumer Price Index (CPI) reporting the year-over-year inflation rate rose to 8.3% in August and national gas prices experience another spike, abortion ranked as the most crucial midterm issue to 36% of respondents. 

In June, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, returning the right to limit abortion to the states. Since this landmark decision, Democrats have leaned into abortion as a key issue in their midterm strategy.

Inflation and the costs of living were the most important issue to 24% of likely voters in Michigan, while 11% felt that threats to American democracy is the issue of top importance.

According to the poll, Whitmer holds a strong 17-point lead over Trump-backed GOP opponent Tudor Dixon in the state’s closely watched gubernatorial race, 50% to 32%. Whitmer’s lead widened from another recent Detroit News poll in early September that found the Democrat held a 13-point advantage over Dixon among voters in Michigan.

“It’s not tightening because nobody has done the work within the Republican electorate to let them know who their candidates are,” Richard Czuba, a pollster and founder of the Glengariff Group, said alongside the polling results that lean greatly in the Democrats favor.

Whitmer has outraised her Republican opponent, and an August financial filing report shows the Democrat had $14 million available in her campaign account, while Dixon revealed she only had $523,930 in her coffers.

The Detroit News/WDIV survey was conducted from September 26-29, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
