Areas like Fort Myers have a long road ahead towards their recovery following Hurricane Ian’s initial U.S. landfall along the Gulf Coast Wednesday.

Fox News’ Ashley Soriano rode along with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office to see the hard-to-reach areas.

The devastation is undeniable and breathtaking.

Video shows how widespread the damage is: boats in mangroves, cars completely underwater and shreds of wood remaining where homes once stood.

Lee County, which includes Fort Myers, is one of the biggest counties in Florida with over 1,200 square miles of land.

Sheriff Carmine Marceno says they still haven’t been able to reach some of the hardest hit areas.

He describes the destruction as being “thrown around like little toys,” something like nothing he’s seen before.

“I’m a New Yorker transplanted to Florida. I’ve been in Florida over 20 years,” the sheriff said. “To me, I’ve been through hurricanes before. But this one in particular, this rocked us. This is devastating.”

Thursday was their first day of assessing the damage. 

Their process includes search, rescue and recovery, but the sheriff hopes they’re rescuing more than recovering.

It’s unclear how many total deaths resulted from Ian, but Sheriff Marceno says Lee County has reported at least 21 deaths as of 3 p.m. eastern on Friday.

Law enforcement is also concerned about scammers and criminals taking advantage of those most affected.

They say triple check who you’re filing insurance claims with or any contractors who may approach you at your home.

California on Friday enacted a new law limiting prosecutors from using rap lyrics as evidence against criminal defendants.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a series of bills, including AB 2799, which requires a pre-trial hearing to determine if hip-hop lyrics are relevant to a case. The bill was approved by state lawmakers in August. 

“For too long, prosecutors in California have used rap lyrics as a convenient way to inject racial bias and confusion into the criminal justice process,” Dina LaPolt, entertainment attorney and co-founder of Songwriters of North America, told Variety in a statement. “This legislation sets up important guardrails that will help courts hold prosecutors accountable and prevent them from criminalizing Black and Brown artistic expression. Thank you, Gov Newsom, for setting the standard. We hope Congress will pass similar legislation, as this is a nationwide problem.”

Assembly member Reginald Jones-Sawyer Sr. championed the bill, saying it protects rap artists, who are mostly Black and Latino. 

“Their stage name might be Little Murder, but that doesn’t mean they’re a murderer,” Jones-Sawyer previously stated, Fox San Francisco reported. “We found that the lyrics that they were using in the court to prosecute someone, those weren’t even that person’s lyrics. It was written by someone else. The music was written by someone else, and they were just performing it.”

The bill came amid the prosecution of Jeffrey Williams, better known as Young Thug, and Sergio Kitchens, known as the rapper Gunna. The two high-profile rappers were arrested in Atlanta on gang charges and their lyrics were quoted in an indictment.

Supporters of the legislation said there is a difference between rap lyrics and what an artist does in real life.

“This is about justice. This is about making sure that the court system looks at that individual and not what people think about that individual,” said Jones-Sawyer.

George Clooney opened up about his admiration for wife, Amal Clooney, Thursday night at the inaugural Albie Awards, hosted by the Clooney Foundation for Justice.

The actor and his human rights attorney wife stepped out together at the New York Public Library, where he gushed about how much he enjoyed working with Amal to create the event.

“Well we collaborate on everything. We collaborated on twins!” Clooney told PEOPLE. “But you know, this is an exciting one because Amal’s gotten journalists out of Egypt, out of Azerbaijan, prisons, out of — all over the world, Myanmar. My father’s a journalist. I have a great affinity for them — her mother’s a journalist. So it’s really exciting for me when she’s able to get people who are wrongly accused for doing their job out [of prison]. So, for me, it’s just — I couldn’t be more proud of my wife.”

The Albie Awards, created by the celebrity couple, was named after South African justice Albie Sachs and honor those defenders of justice. Celebrity guests such as Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Dua Lipa, and Bruce Springsteen attended the event.

Sachs also received a lifetime achievement award for his commitment to ending apartheid in South Africa.
