Approximately 800 great white sharks have visited Cape Cod waters from 2015 to 2018, researchers say. 

A population study was published Thursday in the journal Marine Ecology Progress Series.

The team of scientists from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s School for Marine Science and Technology and the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries conducted a mark-recapture survey to estimate the size of the newest white shark hotspot.

The conservancy tweeted that it represents the “first estimate of white shark abundance ever produced in the North Atlantic Ocean.”

The number of white sharks was found to peak in the late summer and early fall when water temperatures were the warmest. 

Mark-recapture uses repeated surveys of uniquely marked animals to estimate population size – although sharks can also be identified based on unique markings and notches in their dorsal fins.

From over 2,800 videos compiled during 137 survey trips over the summer and fall of 2015-2018, the scientists identified 393 individual white sharks included in its model.

“By comparing the number of previously identified individuals to new individuals encountered over time, we were able to estimate the number of sharks visiting the site in each month of the survey, as well as the total for the four-year period,” Megan Winton, lead author of the study and a staff scientist for the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, explained to The Boston Herald.

CAPE COD SHARK ACTIVITY CLOSES BEACH TO SWIMMING

Winton first revealed this population estimate last month during a new National Geographic special.

“Their movements are very dynamic, they trickle in and out,” Greg Skomal, who leads the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries’ Shark Research Program, told the outlet. “Some white sharks simply stop by on their way north while others spend more time along the Cape, likely because they have success feeding on seals.”

He noted that it is important for the public to understand there are not hundreds of sharks swimming off Cape Cod beaches all at the same time.

The study concluded that the need for a consistent means of assessing white shark population size still stands and said the team hoped its model could be a step towards that goal as shark populations in several regions are seemingly recovering due to protection.

“As recovering populations return to regions where they have long been rare or absent, increased interactions between sharks and humans can create conflict and undermine public support of conservation policies. Although the overall risk posed to recreational water users remains low even at aggregation sites, the sensational media coverage that typically accompanies white shark sightings and attacks on humans generates fear and can skew perceptions of risk,” the scientists warned, stating that a lack of quantitative population information can heighten this sense of risk by raising doubt about the scientific basis for management decisions and eroding public trust. 

“Therefore, we view reliable abundance estimates as not only critical for management but also for navigating the complex societal conflicts that will arise when and where white shark populations recover, which will likely present the next major conservation challenge for this iconic species,” the study authors concluded.

Singapore executed a woman for the first time in 19 years on Friday, marking the city-state’s second death by hanging this week for convicted drug traffickers.

Saridewi Djamani, 45, was sentenced to death in 2018 for trafficking nearly 31 grams of pure heroin, according to the Central Narcotics Bureau. The agency described the amount as “sufficient to feed the addiction of about 370 abusers for a week.”

Despite calls from activists to end capital punishment for drug-related crimes, Singapore mandates the death penalty for anyone convicted of trafficking more than 500 grams of cannabis and 15 grams of heroin.

Two days before Djamani’s execution, 56-year-old Mohammed Aziz Hussain was executed by hanging for trafficking approximately 50 grams of heroin, and another drug trafficker is set to be executed next week, the Associated Press reported.

Both Djamani and Hussain were given due process, according to the Central Narcotics Bureau, which allegedly includes appeals of their conviction and sentence, and petition for clemency.

The last known time a woman was hanged in Singapore was in 2004 when 36-year-old hairdresser Yen May Woen was executed for drug trafficking.

The city-state has been asked to do away with executions for drug offenses by human rights groups, international activists and the United Nations, all of whom say evidence shows that capital punishment does not deter illegal drug activity.

Singapore authorities disagree with those findings and insist the death sentences are important in slowing drug demand and supply, according to the AP.

WORLDWIDE EXECUTIONS INCREASED BY 53% IN 2022

The execution set for Aug. 3 is for a former delivery driver convicted in 2019 of trafficking around 50 grams of heroin, according to Transformative Justice Collective, a Singapore group that advocates to abolish capital punishment. 

The man maintained in his trial that he thought he was delivering contraband cigarettes for a friend he owed money to, adding that he trusted his friend, so he didn’t check the bag’s contents. Though the court determined him to be a courier, he still had to be given the death penalty under Singapore’s laws, the group said.

If his execution takes place as scheduled, it would be the city-state’s fifth this year.

Human rights groups say 15 people have been executed in Singapore for drug offenses since hangings resumed in March 2022, an average of one a month.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Wednesday adopted new rules to address cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (AI) concerns. 

“I think for the SEC, probably the biggest concern there is potentially, how does this actually impact individual investors and any sort of other aspects of that,” Peter Klimek, director of technology at cybersecurity firm Imperva, told Fox News Digital.

Commissioners voted to propose a rule that would require broker-dealers to address conflicts of interest in the use of AI in trading, which already had potentially dangerous consequences when it came to light during the 2021 GameStop “meme stock” event that they may have utilized AI to amplify user behavior.

The new rule would require companies to disclose a cyberbreach within four days after determining if it resulted in serious material consequences for investors, and to periodically describe their efforts to identify and manage threats in cyberspace. 

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

The AI proposal would require broker-dealers to “eliminate or neutralize” any conflict of interest that occurs if a trading platform’s predictive data analytics put the broker’s financial interest ahead of that of the firm’s clients.

“We’ve seen instances where already efforts to use large language models for automating security tasks have resulted in instances where the hallucinatory effects of the models have basically led to false positives,” Klimek said.

AI, AUTOMATION FORECAST TO TAKE MORE JOBS FROM WOMEN THAN MEN BY 2030

“I think this ability to lead you down the wrong path is really something that’s not unique to any individual domain,” he said. “That’s really where I think we see some of the risks associated with the models, especially as organizations look to really turn these into actual products that they can deliver to users and consumers.”

Klimek highlighted the volume of data required to train AI models as a concern since it likely will lead to even more bots appearing on the internet to scrape data, raising privacy concerns.

ACCELERATED ADOPTION OF AI COULD AUTOMATE 30% OF AMERICANS’ WORK HOURS

Even more concerning, though, would be the automation of tasks that could lead to AI attempting to manipulate stock markets and prices.

“Talking about the context of stock prices, the manipulation, this is potentially an area where you can see automated bots really trying to influence markets that certainly will have the potential as well,” he said, suggesting that analysts need to pay attention to finding vulnerabilities in software and the potential impact on data breaches.

Republican commissioners objected to these first two measures, claiming the proposal was unnecessary in light of brokerages’ disclosure requirements and could stifle the use of new technologies.

In a third vote on Wednesday, the SEC unanimously proposed the requirement for more internet-based investment advisers to register with the federal agency, narrowing an exemption that officials said some had used to avoid this.

If adopted, the rule would require that investment advisers provide investment advice through a functioning, interactive website, among other changes, thereby preventing them from using the two-decade-old exemption inappropriately.
