Central Texas residents who spoke with Fox News criticized Elon Musk’s reported plans to build a utopia-like town that would provide housing for his Austin-area employees, with two saying it reminded them of ill-fated mining communities.

“That sounds scary, like old mining towns,” Roxanne, who moved to Bastrop County four years ago, told Fox News.

Tasha, also of Bastrop County, agreed.

“We’re turning the clocks back and doing like coal miner town situation,” the mother told Fox News.

Musk reportedly plans to construct his own town in Bastrop County near two of his companies facilities, SpaceX and the Boring Company, The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this month, citing land records and people familiar with the plan. Musk has reportedly described his vision for the future town, called Snailbrook, as a type of Texas utopia in which his staff could live and work, according to the Journal.

Michelle, who moved to the Bastrop area last year, was skeptical.

“Utopia sounds very scary,” she told Fox News. “If you … read the books, the utopia is not usually at all what it’s presented to be.”

The town will reportedly include a residential site that’s already been established next to an under-construction Boring Company facility. A flag spotted Tuesday at the site, which will include modular homes and recreational spaces, read “welcome, snailbrook, tx, est. 2021.”

The community will reportedly also welcome Tesla workers, headquartered in nearby Austin, in the hopes of offering them newly constructed homes at below-market rents.

“I hope that the people who live in those houses and in that community do not get stuck in the trap of the things that you saw in those types of planned communities for business,” Tasha told Fox News. “Basically, they become your indentured servants because they have no way to have the mobility out of it.”

Erin, who runs a farm overlooking the SpaceX facility that’s under construction, said she felt Musk was “destroying” the surrounding pristine countryside to build his ambitious new town.

“Here he is saying that there’s gonna be a utopia down the street,” she told Fox News. “Well, there already is one.”

None of Musk’s companies returned a request for comment.

A move by Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs to scrap a Border Strike Force in the state is sparking criticism from Republicans in the state — although it does have the backing of at least one Democrat.

Hobbs, a Democrat, said that she intends to reroute funding for the strike force, which was set up in 2015 by former Gov. Doug Ducey, and said the money could be used to coordinate a law enforcement response at the border.

“What our budget intends to do is to reallocate those funds where they can be most purposeful. I’ve said this before, recent reporting has indicated it’s not a force, it’s not striking at the border, and so we can repurpose those dollars to where they can be more beneficial in terms of coordinating a law enforcement response at the border,” she said during a tour of the border with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

According to its website, the force is part of the Arizona Department of Public Safety and “not only targets border crimes but provides a comprehensive collaborative approach to help secure Arizona’s border and thwart transnational criminal organizations.”

The agency’s mission includes identifying and targeting transnational criminal organizations and strengthening deterrent efforts aimed at smugglers and drug traffickers.

“The BSF operations focus on roving criminal interdiction patrol details, intelligence-led remote area operations, outbound details, and deterrent saturation patrols to identify, deter, disrupt, and dismantle criminal organizations,” it says.

However, Hobbs has referenced reporting by the Arizona Republic, which cast doubt on the work of the unit and found that most of its work occurred outside the four main border counties, although it did report that the force had made some “impressive” drug busts. Jeffrey Glover, the new head of the Arizona Department of Public Safety, also said recently that he supports the move to reroute the funding.

The decision to ditch the force has the support of one of the most high-profile Democrats in the state — U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., whose office stressed the overall need for resources at the border.

“What’s most important to Senator Kelly is that resources get to where they are most needed, which this step will still do, so law enforcement has the tools they need to help stop drug and human trafficking while keeping our communities safe,” spokesperson Marisol Samayoa told Fox News Digital.

However, Republicans in the House caucus tore into the move, saying that it is part of a pattern from Hobbs’ administration and will only serve to weaken border security in the state just as it is still dealing with a historic migrant crisis.

“In the same manner that Joe Biden has destroyed our country with his welcomed support for the prolonged lawlessness and drug crisis along our southern border, Katie Hobbs is destroying Arizona in three short months since taking office by her reckless dismantling of the Border Strike Task Force,” Rep. Paul Gosar, said. “Countless more people will die from Hobbs’ open border policies.”

Rep. Andy Biggs called the move “shameful.”

“The courageous members of the Arizona Border Strike Force Bureau keep Arizonans safer every day. There is no rational reason to undermine border and national security efforts amid a historic border crisis,” he said.

Rep. Debbie Lesko, said the force “was created to help combat the criminal cartels who are now freely smuggling migrants and record-amounts of deadly drugs across our southern border.”

“It is unacceptable that Governor Hobbs would take away this important resource meant to restore Arizona’s border security and stop the criminal cartels,” she said.

Rep. Eli Crane, meanwhile, said that the dismantling is “foolish and indicative of her party’s cowardly and destructive border policies.”

“The Border Strike Task Force was established to protect Arizona’s communities from international criminal organizations – namely the Mexican cartels plaguing our southern border with illicit drug smuggling and human trafficking,” Crane said.

Crane accused Hobbs of having “done nothing to secure our border or make Arizona’s families safer.”

“Instead of working tirelessly to protect Arizona’s families from the deadly effects of Mexican fentanyl and sex traffickers, she’s too busy waging war on “hair discrimination” and vetoing common sense budget proposals that would help everyday Arizonans. Now, by announcing plans to abolish the Border Strike Task Force, she’s joining the likes of Secretary Mayorkas and President Biden in actively worsening the crisis at our border.”

The move comes amid an ongoing battle in Washington D.C. as well as border states over the ongoing crisis. Republicans are blaming the migrant surge on the Biden administration’s “open-border” policies, while Democrats and the administration have targeted Republicans for falling to agree to border funding requests made by the administration.

Most patients who are admitted to hospitals with acute viral infections are given antibiotics by their doctors or health care providers as a precaution against bacterial co-infection.

Yet new research suggests this practice may not improve their survival rates.

Researchers investigated the impact of antibiotic use on survival in more than 2,100 patients in a hospital in Norway between the years 2017 and 2021, Reuters reported.

The researchers found that giving antibiotics to people with common respiratory infections was unlikely to lower the risk of death within 30 days.

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, antibiotics were prescribed for around 70% of COVID-19 patients in some countries, Reuters also said.

This potentially has contributed to the scourge of antibiotic-resistant pathogens known as superbugs.

The new data has not been published in a medical journal to date.

It suggests that there is “a huge overuse of antibiotics,” said lead author Dr. Magrit Jarlsdatter Hovind from Akershus University Hospital and the University of Oslo, Norway, according to Reuters.

Microbes have become resistant to many treatments, given the overuse and misuse of antibiotics.

Scientists consider this development a tremendous threat to global health, given that the pipeline of replacement therapies in development is alarmingly sparse, Reuters also noted.

The latest research is to be presented at next month’s European Congress of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases in Copenhagen.

It involved patients who tested positive via nasal or throat swab for viral infections such as the flu, RSV or COVID-19.

Those with confirmed bacterial infections were excluded from the analysis.

In total, 63% of the 2,111 patients received antibiotics for their respiratory infections during their hospital stay.

Overall, 168 patients died within 30 days — of which only 22 had not been prescribed antibiotics.

After accounting for factors such as sex, age, severity of disease and underlying illnesses among the patients, the researchers found those prescribed antibiotics during their hospital stay were twice as likely to die within 30 days than those not given antibiotics.

Both the sicker patients and those with more underlying illnesses were more likely to get antibiotics and to die, the research team noted.

Other factors such as patients’ smoking status could have also played a role, they said.

“Doctors have to dare to not give antibiotics, instead of doubting and giving antibiotics just in case,” Hovind said, according to Reuters.

There are limitations of a retrospective study such as this one.

It is why a clinical trial, which Hovind and colleagues recently initiated, is needed to determine whether patients admitted to the hospital with common respiratory infections should be treated with antibiotics, she said, as Reuters reported.

Meanwhile, in late January 2023, a group of European patient and consumer groups told the European Union’s drug regulator that it needs to do more to tackle shortages of some widely used antibiotics in the region, according to a letter sent and reviewed by Reuters.

The letter to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) comes as antibiotics, including amoxicillin, have been in short supply since last October, as Reuters reported.

The letter said measures like substituting amoxicillin with other antibiotics have squeezed supply of some other drugs — and that the current steps in place to deal with the shortages have not contained the crisis.

There has been a spike in demand for certain drugs linked to the resurgence of respiratory infections after two years of COVID restrictions, putting extra pressure on global supplies.

Drugmakers also cut output when demand dipped at the height of the pandemic.

But the letter highlighted growing concerns about prolonged shortages in the region even as the winter comes to an end.

In another recent study on a related topic, children who contracted lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) at two years of age or younger were found to be more likely to die prematurely from that same condition as adults.

These types of infections were linked to one-fifth of the deaths.

The study was conducted by a group of London researchers and led by Dr. James Peter Allinson of the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London. It was published in The Lancet in early March.

The eight-decade study analyzed data from the Medical Research Council National Survey of Health and Development, which followed 3,589 participants in England, Scotland and Wales all born in March 1946.

George Mason University announced that Virginia Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin will be the commencement speaker at the institution’s 2023 graduation ceremony in May, and some students are pushing to cancel his speech.

Students at the university started a petition on Thursday, the same day Youngkin was announced as the speaker, demanding Younkgin not be permitted to speak or even attend the commencement ceremony on May 18.

“As a Patriot and prospective alumna of George Mason University, I and my peers do not want the memories of our graduation day to be tainted by an individual who has harmed and continues to harm the people he serves,” senior Alaina Ruffin wrote on the petition. “On behalf of the GMU Class of 2023, we call on you to sign this petition and demand that George Mason University administration take appropriate action to ensure Governor Youngkin does not attend or speak at the Spring 2023 Commencement Ceremony.”

Ruffin appeared to take particular issue with the governor’s record in approving legislation on transgender issues and controversial school curricula. His administration’s proposals have included prohibiting transgender students from using bathrooms or participating on sports teams that do not correspond with their biological sex and banning critical race theory and sexually explicit books in schools.

“George Mason University prides itself on being one of ‘the most diverse institutions in the Commonwealth.’ Yet by having Governor Youngkin as this year’s Commencement speaker, we believe that the University compromises its supposed values of centering students’ experiences and overall well-being,” she continued. “When satiating its own desire to appease the powerful few, the University, once again, has abandoned these principles.”

More than 5,100 people have signed the petition as of early Sunday morning.

The university’s student government similarly said it is “deeply saddened and concerned” by the decision to host Youngkin as commencement speaker.

PENNSYLVANIA DEMOCRAT CALLS ON UNIVERSITY TO ‘CANCEL’ SPEAKERS WHO QUESTION TRANSGENDER IDEOLOGY

“The Youngkin administration has supported and created policies attacking transgender youth, racial and ethnic minorities, and LGBTQ+ individuals,” the student government’s leadership wrote in a press release. “George Mason University’s current motto stands as, ‘fostering Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion’; however, the actions of the Youngkin administration demonstrate their commitment to the opposite. To host Glenn Youngkin at our spring commencement is not only a betrayal towards every minority group on campus, but it also amplifies their hypocrisy and dishonesty from Mason’s administration itself.”

BLACC Mason, the university’s black, African-heritage, and Caribbean coalition, also released a statement opposing Youngkin as commencement speaker.

“It is our responsibility as members of this community to stand up against bigotry and intolerance,” the group wrote on Instagram. “We must demand that our administration acts and removes Youngkin as the commencement speaker. We cannot allow our university to provide a platform for someone who actively promotes discrimination and hate.”

Youngkin is scheduled to speak to the university’s class of 2023 at EagleBank Arena on May 18, becoming the latest sitting Virginia governor to address Mason graduates, joining former governors Jim Gilmore, Mark Warner, Tim Kaine and Terry McAuliffe.

“Governor Youngkin’s drive for lifelong learning and his entrepreneurial mindset is what we cultivate in all of our graduates,” Mason University President Gregory Washington said in a statement.
