Ominous Flyer Sent To New Mexico Residents Attempts To Intimidate Voters

Regardless of your party affiliation, I think it’s safe to say that this election has gotten pretty ugly.

But as 2016 has taught us, until November 9 (and maybe not even then) we still have the opportunity to sink lower into our despair. In one state, flyers that potential voters received in the mail contained just the right intimidating language to pull us further down even when we thought we’d already hit rock bottom.

Voters in New Mexico received the flyer pictured below, which states, “When the Democrats win the election and you didn’t do your part…your neighbors will know.”

The New Mexico Republican Party has confirmed they sent this flyer, which indicates that people will know their neighbors’ votes and treat them differently. The Republican Party chose not to explain the flyer’s message, except to say via a spokesman to Snopes.com, “You’ll have to consult other news sources.”

The Daily Beast reports one recipient’s friend Jake Moffitt as saying, “It sounded pretty damn sinister, honestly. He said there was a map on it with a bunch of question marks around local houses. I’m glad it’s getting some attention because holy shit.”

The Democratic Party roundly condemned the flyer in a statement: “The Republican Party of New Mexico’s attempt to use aggressive intimidation toward voters is just another example of what has become the Republican standard.”

While Snopes.com reports that there are no regulations for campaign flyers, federal election law says it is illegal to “intimidate, threaten, or coerce” anyone into voting, not voting, or changing their vote.
