Hi, my name is Nathan and in this video, we’re going to talk about personally identifiable information. I live in Bellevue Washington due to my absolute love of online shopping.
This information, along with my office, address birth date.
Email and phone numbers are publicly available.
How come well, I enter the information, often on various discount signup forms and sometimes also during checkout?
I don’t fear being targeted or feel threatened by this information being public, as this may not be sufficient for anyone to link it back to me.
So this information by itself poses only a low risk.
However, if this information is combined with my driver’s license number social security, number financial account number protected health information, login credentials, or confidential documents, it becomes more possible to link it to me specifically.
If confidential information about me becomes easily accessible to the public, then matters would become sensitive.
Confidentiality is primed to my safety, and when that is breached, I face a higher risk of being targeted.
To avoid this high-risk situation, I need to be careful while filling out forms that demand confidential personal information. I must be careful to only offer this critical information about myself, either in person or over the phone for it being entered into a secure system.
Handling personal information is important, so it may be wise to limit the printing of such information and have it secured in a storage area for physical documents.
Adding locks and passwords can be your best friend in this situation.
By securing personally identifiable information you protect yourself or your organization protects employees from identity theft.
