El Efecto Pigmalión

The Pygmalion Effect is the phenomenon whereby higher expectations lead to higher performance. It can best be understood by a circle where our beliefs about another person,’s, abilities, influence our actions towards this person.

These actions have an impact on others,’ beliefs about themselves, Beliefs about themselves, cause the actions of others towards us which again reinforce our beliefs about that person, and so on and so on, and so on.

Let’s look at an example and start with your beliefs.

Imagine that you are the coach of a basketball team and you watch your team on the first day Chris and Jos are new members of the team.

Chris reminds you of a famous player Jose reminds you of an annoying boy from your high school years.

You unconsciously decide what to expect from each of them.

Your beliefs influence your actions When Chris walks onto the court.

You’re happy to see him when he plays.

You push him to do better and to practice harder to stay an extra hour.

If he makes a mistake, you explain how to improve When Jose walks in you barely notice him. You’re happy to see him score points, but you don’t give him much feedback and you don’t spend extra time on his training.

When Jos makes a mistake, you feel a little upset.

Your actions impact their beliefs about themselves.

Christ feels that you appreciate him, and he appreciates you in return.

He believes in his success.

Jos feels that you have little patience and appreciation for him.

You don’t believe in your success, Their beliefs about themselves cause their actions towards you.

Chris finds more and more joy in playing and never misses a training session During the games.

He gives one hundred percent all the time Jos finds less joy than before playing and does not give all his effort in the games.

He starts missing. Training sessions sometimes reinforce your beliefs about them.

You see how Chris enjoys playing, how he trains hard and shows rapid improvement in his performance, Jos seems not to be very motivated.

His skills do not improve as much and he begins to attend less.

You knew right away, Thank goodness.

Your instincts were correct.

The Pygmalion Effect is also known as the Rosenthal experiment, which is named after research by Robert Rosenthal at Harvard.

In the first study, I challenged test subjects to train rats, to complete a maze.

Half of the group was told that their rats were extremely intelligent and specifically trained.

The other half were told their rats were dumb.

The rats were all the same During the experiment, however, the intelligent rats performed much better than the dumb ones. This showed how the expectations of the trainers even influenced the performance of rats Rosenthal later studied Pygmalion in schools, together with Leonore Jacobson.

At the beginning of the school year, a group of elementary school teachers was told that some of their new students had extraordinary talent and potential.

This information, which was completely fabricated, was randomly provided to average students in each class.

All the students had taken the IQ test beforehand By the end of the year.

The students who described themselves as the most talented had significantly increased their performance on IQ tests compared to the rest of the class.

Robert Rosenthal concluded that when we expect certain behaviors from others, we are likely to act in ways that make the expected behavior more likely to occur.
