JENNIFER MORTON INTERVIEWS CRAZY STEVE GOOF A rare, candid look at the infamous Toronto hardcore punk band Bunchofuckingoofs as Jennifer Morton, author of Dirty, Drunk and Punk interviews Crazy Steve Goof about his years as BFGs’ lead singer. Jennifer will share some of her collection of classic BFGs footage captured while she was a reporter and producer for The NewMusic and Steve Goof will perform with surprise guests. Wait, is this a BFGs reunion? DIRTY, DRUNK, AND PUNK: The Bunchofuckingoofs were a punk band, art collective, bicycle gang, and a group of loud-mouthed political agitators. They lived crammed together in Forts — punk versions of Andy Warhol’s Factory; a boozecan, recording studio, and insane asylum. Here they slept in cages and made their music, clothes, and rules. Their name even made it onto the Berlin Wall. The music was angry, choppy poetry puked through a mike. What Spin magazine calls a “…gnashing brand of apocalyptic abuse metal.” Live shows were punk performance art. Fronted by Crazy Steve Goof; lead singer, alpha male, and den father to a motley crew of misfits including Thor, Bambi, Uncle Anus, MadDog, Scumbag, Godzilla, Bones, and Fetus. Some of the stories in Dirty, Drunk, and Punk are recalled from beer-addled brains, remembered through the haze of time, or passed down through some kind of oral broken telephone. The stories may not be pretty but the book is. First as a reporter and producer on The NewMusic, a pioneering music journalism show on Toronto’s CityTV, and later as host and producer of TVFrames, an edgy, internationally syndicated show about the art, music, fashion, and photography scenes in cities around the world. A decade of her stories and photographs are recounted in her first book Belong: A TV Journalist’s Search for Urban Culture from Beirut to Bamake, and from Havana to Ho Chi Minh City. Next came Borderline, a photographic chronicle of the last days of a squat in downtown Toronto. The project documents the lives of a group of train-hopping squeegee kids, hippies, and junkies who found shelter from the cold and created a community within the walls of a derelict three-story tenement.
