New Jersey Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy touted the positives of President Biden’s student loan handout Sunday, while also admitting that higher education has gotten “too out of control and too out of reach.”

In an exclusive interview for “Fox News Sunday,” Murphy responded to questions from host Mike Emanuel after meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris and Education Secretary Miguel Cardona on how to keep more teachers on the job post-pandemic, including increasing an apprenticeship program and incentives for teachers to come out of retirement without upsetting pensions.

Murphy has praised Biden’s executive action on student loan debt, saying that although he himself paid back his student loan debt into his mid to late 30s, the program gives relief to more than a million New Jerseyans, with Pell grantees getting double pack as a sort of “means test.”

“What can be done, in your view, to address the big picture issue, the underlying issue, the soaring cost of higher education in this country? For example, is it time for an institution like Princeton to tap into its $37 billion-plus endowment to help deserving students?” Emanuel asked.

NJ MOM SHARES WORRIES ABOUT BIDEN’S STUDENT LOAN HANDOUT AT THIS ‘TIME OF CRAZINESS’

Murphy said New Jersey offers a community college opportunity grant and a garden state guarantee for the third or fourth year of undergraduate studies, as well as institutions themselves offering payment options, with blind needs-based admission programs becoming more common.

“Listen, we need to continue to make higher education more accessible and more affordable because the premise of your question is right on the money—it has gotten too out of control and too out of reach,” the governor said.

Murphy estimated that “within a matter of weeks” New Jersey could come out with a comprehensive program related to analyzing postmortem responses to COVID-19 care.

“We’ve already taken in June of 2020 a deep dive with an independent firm, but we’re going to do the entire COVID response including long-term care,” Murphy said. “I want to make sure it’s effective not just in teaching us what went right, what went wrong, but also that it can be a tool for future governors, future administrations. I hope frankly that it’s a trigger for Congress to take a similar to look at the national response.”

In New Jersey, schools did not return to in-person learning until last September, about a year into the pandemic, but still, the governor asserted that officials had no other choice regarding closures.

“Listen, I think that is going to be one of those things that folks debate forever and for always. We knew learning loss, we know it’s real. We know about the mental health stress on everybody — kids in particular kids, educators and families,” Murphy said. “Particularly early on, but frankly when the variants — the delta variant and others kept coming back, when we had so little knowledge about this pandemic and about this virus, we had no other choice.

“We will become laser-focused on closing those gaps which we know exist,” he added. “I’ve just become the chair of the National Governor’s Association. My chairman’s initiative is focused on mental health of our students for this very reason. So, it’s real, we know it. It’s up to us now to close those gaps.”

Murphy also defended Biden’s recent criticism of the “MAGA philosophy” approaching election season.

“Listen I am the former US ambassador to Germany, so sadly I have seen the history of the 20th century up close and personal,” he said.

The governor predicted Democratic victories in the November midterms attributed to the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade but denied having any sights on the White House in 2024.

I chose life for my daughter 10 years ago. If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t be here today.

At 20 years old, I had gone down a very dark path and thought that coping with years of abuse and assault meant immersing myself in drugs, alcohol and risky behavior. I had no goals or motivation to disrupt this lifestyle, which was numbing my pain.

My positive pregnancy test was the one thing that jolted me back to reality, as I stared in terror at the two pink lines in that little window.

VULNERABLE HOUSE DEMOCRATS MOSTLY REFUSE TO SAY WHETHER THERE SHOULD BE ANY LIMITS ON ABORTION

I scrambled through my fog of emotion and fear to think about what this meant. I knew that I was carrying life — that it wasn’t just me anymore — but I had no money, and my family refused to support me. I didn’t know how I would make it, but I was determined to figure it out for my baby’s sake.

There was something about that positive pregnancy test that motivated me, igniting a deeper drive than I’d ever known myself capable of possessing. Envisioning my future daughter struggling with the cycle of abuse and trauma that had plagued me for so many years, I broke down sobbing. “My daughter will NEVER be exposed or subjected to what I have been through,” I promised myself through my tears.

I knew right away that I needed to live a sober life, and that I couldn’t indulge in laziness anymore. I was determined to be strong and do whatever it took to change my life for her. But where would I even start?

That’s when I met Randy and Evelyn, the founders of a local maternity home called the Paul Stefan Foundation, who welcomed me with open arms. The next few years of learning how to take care of myself and my growing baby were the hardest of my entire life, but they transformed me and my future in an incredible way.

Yet my progress wasn’t linear. I’d been hurt my whole life and was quick to lash out against those trying to help me. Randy and Evelyn met my disrespect and bitterness with so much grace, giving me time to heal and grow into a compassionate woman through their steadfast patience and love.

They did more than just change my demeanor. Evelyn recognized that I was just a young girl who needed mothering just as much as my own baby needed me. She taught me the importance of adhering to a schedule, how to be a good steward of my money, that my appearance matters, and that my daughter should always be my first priority. She and Randy brought in people to teach the other women and me how to cook, organize, and budget. They offered the other moms and me weekly parent and baby education through a community resource, where I learned crucial information about my pregnancy and developing baby. These classes continued for years after the birth of my daughter to make sure that she was reaching her developmental milestones.

I lived at the Paul Stefan Foundation for five years and have remained involved with the home for 10 years overall. Their impact and resources not only helped me to get an education, but also inspired me to find my life calling.

Randy’s tough love helped me learn independent living skills such as how to change a flat tire on my car, to live a healthy lifestyle, to act like a professional, and motivated me to put my emotions aside so that I could accomplish my goals. He spent hours of his own time making sure that I was fully equipped for a successful career once I left the shelter of the home. “Comfortability doesn’t matter,” he would say, “you have a job to do, and people to stand up for.” His advice inspired me, and I promised myself that I would never allow a life circumstance to pull me down again.

Evelyn helped connect me with the Virginia Career Works Center, where I learned how to build a resume and find agencies, jobs and businesses. This program helped me get into college, navigate the educational system, buy textbooks, and even make minimum wage as part of a grant program. I earned this money through volunteering at Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services Board, SAFE: Services to Abused Families Inc., and in Head Start classrooms. As a result, I was offered a role as a substitute teacher with the Early Head Start program, in the same classroom as my then 15-month-old daughter.

Evelyn’s selfless and loving example ignited a deep passion inside of me for children. As I watched Evelyn pour unrelenting love into my daughter and the other women’s children, I realized that I was called to be a social worker, to advocate that this type of love be used to break familial cycles of trauma and abuse. So many people have nobody to love them, I thought, and so many feel trapped in dark situations like I once was. What if I could help people heal, or be the person that I once so desperately needed for someone else?

Today, I am a foster care social worker in the Virginia Department of Social Services, where I have been promoted five times since 2017. I credit my success to the perseverance, professionalism and compassion Randy and Evelyn taught me. They never let me give up on myself; they pushed me to do more than what I ever could have dreamed of accomplishing. More importantly, I know that my daughter is looking to my example, and I want her to see that she is capable of great things if she works hard and has grace.

So many women resort to abortion because they think it’s their only option, or that their baby will hinder their goals. I wish I could comfort those women and tell them how keeping my baby motivated me to achieve every single goal that I set my mind on.

I’d tell them that I named my daughter Lei’Lani, which means royal child of heaven.

Why? I tell anyone who will listen — God sent her to me to save my life.

The U.S. Border Patrol is warning migrants attempting to illegally enter the U.S. not to do so amid record-high temperatures and intense weather, which recently resulted in at least nine deaths.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Chief Patrol Agent Jason Owens of the Del Rio Sector released a “warning of extreme importance” to those wanting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border as passage through the Rio Grande has become “more dangerous.”

The warning comes as migrants continue to cross the Del Rio Sector by the hundreds, he said.

“The currents of the Rio Grande have become more dangerous due to recent and continuing rainfall and more rain is forecasted for the coming week,” Owens said. “Despite these adverse conditions, U.S. Border Patrol, Del Rio Sector continues to encounter more than 100+, 200+ attempting to cross the Rio Grande daily.”

NINE MIGRANTS FOUND DEAD AT TEXAS BORDER, 53 APPREHENDED TRYING TO CROSS RIO GRANDE

The recent weather patterns have caused at least nine deaths and the Border Patrol is asking migrants to refrain from crossing “in an effort to prevent further loss of life.”

On Saturday, CBP said a ninth individual had died after a large group of migrants attempted to cross the Rio Grande earlier in the week. The announcement came after the bodies of eight migrants were found. Six were found by CBP agents while two were found by Mexican authorities.

Fifty-three migrants were apprehended by U.S. authorities, including 37 migrants who were rescued from the water by Border Patrol agents. Mexican authorities also arrested 39 people during the same incident.

In August, CBP said its agents discovered bodies of more than 200 migrants in the Del Rio sector this fiscal year.

As a whole, U.S.-Mexico border crossings continue to overwhelm American immigration enforcement. CBP said it makes more than 200,000 encounters each month with more than 500,000 migrants slipping through immigration enforcement efforts this fiscal year.

A brawl that broke out at the Minnesota State Fair on Saturday and the police response that followed led to a mass crowd panic and exodus, as well as an early closure of the fairgrounds.

The fight occurred at Cafe Caribe in the Midway section of the fairgrounds and resulted in police quickly moving to end it and using pepper spray, witnesses told FOX 9.

One witness, Ali Jo, told the outlet she was in Cafe Caribe when she saw a commotion. She said she witnessed about three people fighting. Jo noticed her eyes started burning as people began running. An officer later told her police had deployed pepper spray.

“A fog overtook the intersection and you could hear echoes of people coughing and gagging, everyone was covering their nose and mouth with their shirts and sweatshirts.” Jo said.

MINNESOTA STORMS KNOCK OUT POWER, SHUT DOWN STATE FAIR

“There was a shift, people were running away, and then people just started booking out of there. It all happened so quick … all I knew is that I just wanted to get away from there,” she continued.

Witnesses said they had heard gunfire at the fair, although the Minnesota State Fair Police Department has not confirmed any details of the incident.

The State Fair said in a statement shortly before 11 p.m. that the fairgrounds “began closing early this evening at approximately 10:20 p.m. due to disturbances in the area of the Midway. There is nothing more to confirm at this time.”

ARKANSAS COUNTY FAIR SHOOTING LEAVES AT LEAST 1 INJURED, SUSPECT STILL ON THE LOOSE

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, a Democrat, thanked law enforcement for their response to the disruption.

“Grateful for the coordinated law enforcement presence at the State Fair,” Walz wrote in a tweet. “Officers are working quickly to usher folks off the fairgrounds and respond to reports of violence in the Midway area. We’re monitoring the situation and working quickly to restore order.”

Last weekend, the state fair was forced to shut down rides and cancel a concert after strong storms knocked down trees and caused power outages across the Minneapolis area.

Other states have also experienced chaos at their fairs recently.

A fight broke out at the Western Idaho Fair on August 26, resulting in one person getting stabbed and another suffering an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound.

That same night, a shooting at a county fair in Fayetteville, Arkansas, left one person injured. The suspect had also fled the scene but has since been taken into custody.

A second attempt at launching the Artemis I moon rocket was pushed back after NASA failed to plug a fuel leak discovered during tanking. This is the second time in five days that technical issues have kept the spacecraft on the launchpad.

NASA’S JAMES WEBB RELEASES FIRST DIRECT IMAGE OF A PLANET OUTSIDE OUR SOLAR SYSTEM

The space agency’s attempt for a rescheduled launch of the crewless capsule on Saturday afternoon was first delayed at about 9 a.m. as engineers began attempting to fix a hydrogen fuel leak in the engine section at the rocket’s bottom. NASA officially stopped the Saturday liftoff at about 11:20 a.m.

Engineers first attempted to fix the hydrogen leak by warming the connector and chilling it with cold fuel to stop the leak. After the first attempt was not successful, they tried to repressurize the leak with helium.

ARTEMIS MOON LAUNCH: AMERICANS WEIGH IN ON WHETHER NASA PROGRAM IS WORTH $93B COST

NASA said during a press conference on Saturday afternoon that Artemis I would not be launching before the period ends, which is through September 8. There is another launch period later in September if engineers are able to fix the leak without moving the massive rocket to the Vehicle Assembly Building for additional work. There is also another launch period in October that NASA may choose.

When the 32-story-tall Space Launch System (SLS) rocket launches, the crew capsule will carry three test dummies and fly around the moon and back over a 37-day flight test period.

If the first two Artemis missions succeed, NASA plans on landing astronauts back on the moon, including the first woman to set foot on the moon, as early as 2025.
