San Jose State women’s volleyball player Brooke Slusser praised Nevada Wolf Pack players for speaking about competing against her team, which has a transgender athlete on its roster.

Slusser expressed her support on X.

“Round of applause to the girls of the (Nevada Wolf Pack) volleyball team,” Slusser wrote on X. “Deciding to go against what the school was forcing on you as young women and taking a stand for what you believe takes courage! Another great step in the right direction for women’s sports!”

The issue for Nevada and several other schools is about going up against Blaire Fleming. The transgender female player has been seen spiking balls into the face of opponents during matches.

Nevada players initially said in a statement to OutKick on Monday they planned on forfeiting their match against the Spartans to “stand in solidarity” with Southern Utah, Boise State, Wyoming and Utah State, who have all pulled out of their matches against the Spartans.

“We demand that our right to safety and fair competition on the court be upheld,” the statement continued. “We refuse to participate in any match that advances injustice against female athletes.”

However, the school said in a statement on Monday night the team would not forfeit the match.

“The players’ decision and statement were made independently, and without consultation with the University or the athletic department. The players’ decision also does not represent the position of the University,” the statement read.

“The University and its athletic programs are governed by the Nevada Constitution and Nevada law, which strictly protect equality of rights under the law, and that equality of rights shall not be denied or abridged by this state or any of its subdivisions on account of race, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, ancestry or national origin. The University is also governed by federal law as well as the rules and regulations of the NCAA and the Mountain West Conference, which include providing competition in an inclusive and supportive environment.

“The University intends to move forward with the match as scheduled, and the players may choose not to participate in the match on the day of the contest. No players will be subject to any team disciplinary action for their decision not to participate in the match.”

Slusser, who joined the team in 2023 after transferring from Alabama, joined in a lawsuit against the NCAA, headed by former college swimmer and OutKick contributor Riley Gaines, over the governing body’s current policies on gender identity.

Slusser claimed that she had not been aware that Fleming was transgender, despite sharing rooms together on team trips, per the court documents. Slusser also expressed safety concerns for opponents playing against Fleming. Slusser’s complaint said that she and the other players on the team “could not fully protect themselves” from Fleming’s volleyball spikes.

The father of a 10-year-old girl who was found dead in England called U.K. police after fleeing to Pakistan to admit that he had killed his daughter, prosecutors said Monday.

Urfan Sharif, 42, is on trial at London’s Central Criminal Court on allegations he, his partner Beinash Batool and his brother Faisal Malik murdered Sara Sharif, according to The Associated Press.

Prosecutor William Emlyn Jones said all three defendants played a part in a “campaign of abuse” against Sara in the weeks leading up to her death.

Police found Sara’s body under a blanket in a bunk bed at her home in Woking, which is located southwest of London, on Aug. 10, 2023, with dozens of injuries, including extensive bruising, burns and fractures. The child died of unnatural causes, according to a post-mortem examination.

Jones said law enforcement learned of Sara’s death after her father called U.K. police from Pakistan and said: “I’ve killed my daughter. I legally punished her, and she died.”

He also told the phone operator he did not intend to kill her, but he had “beat her up too much,” the prosecutor said.

Urfan Sharif, Batool and Malik fled the U.K. for the Pakistani capital of Islamabad on Aug. 9.

Police in Pakistan located the three suspects following a search and subsequently sent them to the U.K., where they were arrested upon landing at London’s Gatwick Airport. They were held in prison as they awaited trial.

Jones said the three suspects had lived in the same house as Sara and that it was “inconceivable” that only one of them was responsible for the girl’s death.

The prosecutor said each of the suspects attempted to blame the others for the killing. Urfan Sharif had claimed that Batool, who is Sara’s stepmother, was responsible for the girl’s death and that he made a false confession to protect her.

A recording of a phone call made on the evening of Aug. 8, 2023, the day Sara was believed to have been killed, was played for the jury. In the recording, Batool can be heard asking about booking a flight to Islamabad for four adults and four children.

The three suspects deny murdering Sara or causing or allowing the girl’s death.

The trial is expected to continue until December.

Nearly a dozen members of an Amish family in Pennsylvania were hospitalized on Friday after eating toxic mushrooms, according to local reports and first responders.

Emergency medical personnel with the Delta-Cardiff Volunteer Company Station 57 were alerted to assist with a “mass casualty incident.”

Units were advised that 11 people in Peach Bottom Township had consumed toxic mushrooms and were ill, Station 57 said in a Facebook post.

The post said emergency units were dispatched from York, Lancaster and Harford counties.

Delta-Cardiff Fire Chief Laura Taylor said the adults and children were transported to WellSpan York Hospital in York and were in stable condition, WPMT-TV reported.

Station 57 told WHP-TV that one of the family members had traveled half a mile down Burke Road to find a phone booth to call 911. The family member reportedly said he and the 10 others became sick after consuming wild mushrooms they found in the woods for dinner.

Peach Bottom Township is near the Maryland state line about 56 miles southeast of Harrisburg, the Pennsylvania state capital.

A centuries-old Jewish text that mysteriously ended up on an online marketplace is now returning home.

In a press release last week, the Southern District of New York (SDNY) announced that a district judge confirmed a private owner’s forfeiture of the Di Gara text, which dates back to the 16th century.

The book will be given to the Jewish Theological Seminary of the University of Jewish Studies in Budapest, the SDNY press release said. It was originally published in Venice by Giovanni di Gara, a printer who specialized in Hebrew books, in the late 1500s.

“The Di Gara text is comprised of two works from the Jewish faith: (1) the Chamisa Humshe Torrah (Five Books of Moses), or the Jewish Torrah in book form, and (2) the Haftarot, a series of selections from the Hebrew Bible,” the release explained.

The book changed hands over the years, and was owned by a 19th-century rabbi named Lelio Della Torre until his death.

Della Torre’s collection was then donated to the Budapest Rabbinical Seminary, where the Di Gara text was stolen by Nazi soldiers in 1944.

ONE-OF-A-KIND ANCIENT BATHHOUSE FOUND BURIED IN THE HILLS OF SICILY

“In 1944, in the midst of World War II and the Jewish Holocaust, Nazi forces invaded Budapest and seized and occupied the Budapest Rabbinical Seminary, looting its holdings,” the SDNY statement read. “The Di Gara Text is believed to have disappeared during this period.”

The book mysteriously ended up in the United States in the 80 years it was missing. In March 2023, Hungarian officials noticed the book up for sale on AbeBooks.com, an online marketplace for rare and collectible books.

The book was listed by a New York seller who specialized in Judaica and acquired the book in the 1980s. Homeland Security agents met with the vendor, who eventually handed the book over after being served a warrant. U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres confirmed the voluntary forfeiture on Oct. 4.

“With this forfeiture, a small, but meaningful, piece of the history of the Jewish faith will be returned to its rightful owner, the Budapest Rabbinical Seminary,” SDNY U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said in a press statement. “We may never know how it ended up in the Southern District of New York, but it is now returning home.”
