The family of Orange County Deputy Public Defender Elliot Blair, who died in Mexico on Saturday in what his family says was a “brutal crime,” has released its first statement on his death, including accusations of foul play and suspicious behavior by Mexican authorities.

Blair, 33, was celebrating his first wedding anniversary at Las Rocas Resort and Spa in Rosarito Beach with his wife, Kim, when he was killed. Mexican website Patrol 646 said he was intoxicated and fell to his death from a fourth-floor balcony. Still, the family denied that and said the tragic incident took place in an “open-air walkway located outside the front door of their room.” They also said the incident did not occur off of “any balcony.”

As of Tuesday night, the Blair family said it had received zero communication from Rosarito Beach police, their district attorney’s office or any other Mexican officials besides a liaison to the coroner’s office. Around 2 p.m. Monday, the messenger, a man, said he had been in contact with the medical examiner’s office that performed the autopsy.

He indicated Blair’s cause of death was “severe head trauma” and his case would be forwarded to the local DA’s office to conduct a “possible homicide investigation.” The man also said the toxicology report had not been completed yet.

The statement said the family informed the man they will be hiring a private investigation firm and an independent forensic pathologist. They also said they would be conducting their own toxicology analysis.

“Due to the insufficiency of the investigation, the family feels compelled to conduct their own private investigation in search for the truth,” the statement read.

A liaison with the funeral home suggested to Blair’s family that his body be cremated, an ongoing suggestion since his death, according to the statement. A reason for the suggestion was not provided.

The family insisted otherwise to conducting their investigation into his death.

Though the family has not learned any information from Mexican authorities, they came across a news article that quoted Mexican authorities saying Blair’s death appeared to be an “unfortunate accident,” according to the statement.

“It is highly unfortunate that throughout this entire devastating ordeal, Kim, his loving wife, has been given multiple versions of what happened to Elliot,” the statement read.

The couple had reportedly stayed at the resort on multiple occasions in the past five years, and had stayed in the same room on the third floor more than once. The family said Blair was “very familiar” with the resort layout, including its hallways and walkways.

They also said he was found in his underwear, sleeping tee shirt, and socks, and he was not intoxicated. They added that he was fluent in Spanish.

According to the family, little to no investigation has been conducted by the beach’s police department. Patrol 646 reported staff from the State Attorney General’s office in Mexico took charge of the investigation and removal of the body.

The family’s release ended with the following statement:

“Elliot was a brilliant attorney with a bright future. Elliot’s smile was radiant and warmed the hearts of every person he came into contact with. Elliot had an innate ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Elliot was a loving husband, son and brother. Elliot’s tragic, untimely, and suspicious death has left his family and community with a huge hole in their hearts that will never be repaired.”

As of Wednesday night, over $106,000 was donated to a GoFundMe page aimed at helping his wife “with the cumbersome process involved in transporting Elliot’s body from Mexico to the USA and dealing with all the red tape.”

Gov. Ron DeSantis says he’s seeking to protect Florida from the “biomedical security state,” by permanently banning COVID-19 vaccines and masks.

“It required us over the past few years to stand against major institutions in our society: The bureaucracy, the medical establishment, legacy media and even the President of the United States who, together, were working to impose a biomedical security state on society.” DeSantis said while speaking at the Todd Herendeen Theater in Panama City Beach.

If approved by lawmakers, DeSantis’ efforts will permanently restrict the COVID-19 vaccine mandates and mask rules in schools and prevents public and private employers from hiring and firing individuals based on their vaccine status.

“When the world lost its mind, Florida was a refuge of sanity, serving strongly as freedom’s linchpin,” DeSantis said. “These measures will ensure Florida remains this way and will provide landmark protections for free speech for medical practitioners.”

U.S. Rep. Neal Dunn, Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis and Florida’s Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo joined DeSantis at the press conference in Florida’s panhandle which also featured comments from a number of people who shared their sentiments.

DeSantis asserted that those under 40 who get booster shots are more at risk from boosters than they are from COVID-19, while doctor’s related stories of adverse reactions that they attribute to the vaccine.

“This is the first time in history where we are using this technology widely in human beings,” Florida’s Surgeon General Ladapo said, referring to the mRNA vaccines. “You’re telling people to put it in children, and you’ve never even shown the children to gain from it in terms of an actual help. DeSantis said part of the protections the state will enact include forbidding any mandatory masking in the state and allow medical practitioners the ability to “speak the truth” and to “choose evidence over narrative.”

Previous COVID-19-related policies that were approved by the Florida Legislature in 2021 are set to expire on July 1, 2023, DeSantis’ hopes to enshrine the COVID-19 vaccine and mask protections for the future.

“We need to lead with this by making all of these protections permanent in Florida statute, which we’re going to do in the upcoming legislative session,” DeSantis said.

Following DeSantis’ press conference, House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell promptly called a press conference stating that Governor DeSantis and his administration was “the No. 1 peddler of misinformation from the anti-vax establishment.”

Driskell noted that DeSantis was a champion for the Covid-19 vaccine when it first became available, and that only roughly one-third of Florida nursing home residents are up-to-date on their vaccination status.

Driskell emphasized that “no one ever promised total immunity, but those vaccines do lessen the chance of infection, and they increase the likelihood of a milder case if you do get sick.”

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Tuesday he will appoint a regional official as the new defense minister following the resignation of the much-criticized Christine Lambrecht.

The defense minister-designate, Boris Pistorius, is a member of Scholz’s Social Democratic Party and has served as interior minister of Lower Saxony state since 2013.

“I am very pleased to have won Boris Pistorius, an outstanding politician from our country, for the post of defense minister,” Scholz said in a written statement.

“Pistorius is an extremely experienced politician who has administrative experience, has been involved in security policy for years and, with his competence, assertiveness and big heart, is exactly the right person to lead the Bundeswehr through this change of era,” the chancellor added.

GERMANY’S DEFENSE MINISTER RESIGNS AMID CRITICISM OVER HANDLING OF UKRAINE WAR

Pistorius, 62, is scheduled to receive his certificate of appointment from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and take his oath of office in parliament on Thursday, government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said.

Following Lambrecht’s resignation, the chancellor consulted closely with the members of his party and parliamentary group leaders and decided on Pistorius as the new defense minister, Hebestreit said in a written statement.

“I’m convinced this is someone who will get along with the troops and whom the servicemen and women will like very much,” Scholz told reporters later on Tuesday.

The designated defense minister thanked the chancellor for his nomination and said it is “truly an extraordinary honor for me to take on this office.”

“I know the importance of the task in these times,” Pistorius told reporters. “The tasks that lie ahead of the troops are enormous … I want to make the Bundeswehr strong for the times that lie ahead.”

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is scheduled to visit Berlin this week and then host a meeting of allies at Ramstein Air Base in western Germany. On Sunday, the German and French governments are expected to hold bilateral talks that include a meeting of the countries’ joint security council.

Pistorius completed his military service from 1980 to 1981, then studied law in the western German towns of Osnabrueck and Muenster.

Before being appointed interior minister of Lower Saxony, he served as mayor of Osnabrueck from 2006 to 2013, Germany news agency dpa reported.

Lambrecht had been defense minister since Scholz became chancellor in December 2021. Critics had long portrayed her as being out of her depth.

The German government has faced mounting pressure to make another significant step forward in German military aid to Ukraine by agreeing to deliver Leopard 2 battle tanks. Earlier this month, the government agreed to provide 40 Marder armored personnel carriers and a Patriot air defense missile battery to Kyiv.

Germany has given Ukraine substantial support in recent months, including howitzers, Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns and the first of four IRIS-T surface-to-air missile systems. But critics, some inside Germany’s governing coalition, have long complained of Scholz’s perceived hesitancy to step up aid.

Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck, a member of Germany’s Greens party, welcomed Scholz’ choice of Pistorius. He pointed out that the job comes with a lot of responsibility, especially after Russia’s attack on Ukraine almost a year ago.

“Germany, as part of the European Union and NATO, must be ready to defend itself and strengthen its defense capability, in close cooperation with its partners,” he said.

“There are also important decisions to be made in the short term, in particular the pressing question of how we continue to support Ukraine in its right to self-defense,” Habeck added.
