Nearly a dozen members of an Amish family in Pennsylvania were hospitalized on Friday after eating toxic mushrooms, according to local reports and first responders. 

Emergency medical personnel with the Delta-Cardiff Volunteer Company Station 57 were alerted to assist with a “mass casualty incident.” 

Units were advised that 11 people in Peach Bottom Township had consumed toxic mushrooms and were ill, Station 57 said in a Facebook post. 

The post said emergency units were dispatched from York, Lancaster and Harford counties.

Delta-Cardiff Fire Chief Laura Taylor said the adults and children were transported to WellSpan York Hospital in York and were in stable condition, WPMT-TV reported.

The Pennsylvania State Police also responded to the private residence, according to the station. 

Station 57 told WHP-TV that one of the family members had traveled half a mile down Burke Road to find a phone booth to call 911. The family member reportedly said he and the 10 others became sick after consuming wild mushrooms they found in the woods for dinner. 

Peach Bottom Township is near the Maryland state line about 56 miles southeast of Harrisburg, the Pennsylvania state capital.

A centuries-old Jewish text that mysteriously ended up on an online marketplace is now returning home.

In a press release last week, the Southern District of New York (SDNY) announced that a district judge confirmed a private owner’s forfeiture of the Di Gara text, which dates back to the 16th century.

The book will be given to the Jewish Theological Seminary of the University of Jewish Studies in Budapest, the SDNY press release said. It was originally published in Venice by Giovanni di Gara, a printer who specialized in Hebrew books, in the late 1500s.

“The Di Gara text is comprised of two works from the Jewish faith: (1) the Chamisa Humshe Torrah (Five Books of Moses), or the Jewish Torrah in book form, and (2) the Haftarot, a series of selections from the Hebrew Bible,” the release explained.

The book changed hands over the years, and was owned by a 19th-century rabbi named Lelio Della Torre until his death. 

Della Torre’s collection was then donated to the Budapest Rabbinical Seminary, where the Di Gara text was stolen by Nazi soldiers in 1944.

“In 1944, in the midst of World War II and the Jewish Holocaust, Nazi forces invaded Budapest and seized and occupied the Budapest Rabbinical Seminary, looting its holdings,” the SDNY statement read. “The Di Gara Text is believed to have disappeared during this period.”

The book mysteriously ended up in the United States in the 80 years it was missing. In March 2023, Hungarian officials noticed the book up for sale on AbeBooks.com, an online marketplace for rare and collectible books.

The book was listed by a New York seller who specialized in Judaica and acquired the book in the 1980s. Homeland Security agents met with the vendor, who eventually handed the book over after being served a warrant. U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres confirmed the voluntary forfeiture on Oct. 4.

“With this forfeiture, a small, but meaningful, piece of the history of the Jewish faith will be returned to its rightful owner, the Budapest Rabbinical Seminary,” SDNY U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said in a press statement. “We may never know how it ended up in the Southern District of New York, but it is now returning home.”

Deshaun Watson put together another abysmal performance as starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, this time resulting in a 20-16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Watson, who was traded to the Browns in 2022 and agreed to a fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract upon the deal, was 16 of 24 with 168 passing yards and was sacked five times. He didn’t throw a touchdown pass and neither did the entirety of the Browns’ offense.

Cleveland has yet to score at least 20 points this season. ESPN’s Field Yates pointed out the Browns were the first team in 10 years to fail to hit the 20-point plateau in their first six games of the regular season.

With no hope in sight, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski fielded questions about the starting quarterback situation. He was adamant that Watson would remain the starting quarterback.

Mitchell Schwartz, a retired Super Bowl champion who won a ring with the Kansas City Chiefs during his career as an NFL offensive lineman, scrutinized the Browns for keeping Watson as the starter, a notion felt by much of the Browns’ fan base.

“It’s incredibly s—-y to do this to the rest of the team,” Schwartz wrote on X. “(Offensive lineman) Joel Bitonio is out there every week playing through who knows what and has to wreck his body when they have no chance of being good b/c of the QB. Myles Garrett is playing in pain every week. Feel for everyone else there.”

Schwartz made clear that he didn’t think the blame was on Stefanski, but rather the person who is making the decisions above him.

“Whoever is doing it is the one doing the disservice to the rest of the roster,” Schwartz added.

Watson has gone from a top five, or at least top 10, quarterback when he was with the Houston Texans to, statistically, one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL.

He hasn’t thrown for at least 200 yards in a single game since Nov. 12, 2023, the last game he played that season. 

He hasn’t thrown for at least 300 yards since Jan. 3, 2021, the final game he appeared in with the Texans. At that time, 300 passing yards was routine for him. He hit the mark 10 times in the 2020 season.

“We’re putting ourselves in the danger zone for not being able to accomplish what we want to accomplish,” Watson said after the game.

With a team built for the postseason, another loss would certainly crush any chance of getting back to the playoffs.
