Hollywood stars are looking on the brighter side as they face challenging health conditions.

Famous celebrities, including Michael J. Fox, Sam Neill, Jeff Bridges and Shannen Doherty, have momentarily stepped out of the spotlight to focus on their health, but they continue to share their tumultuous journeys and what helps them get through the unexpected events in their lives.

Here’s how these stars have offered a glimmer of hope as they battle their own personal, yet inspirational, health crises in the public eye.

MICHAEL J. FOX GETS SCARED AMID PARKINSON’S DISEASE BATTLE, BUT ‘THE ABSENCE OF FEAR IS FAITH’

Michael J. Fox has given fans a glimpse inside his battle with Parkinson’s disease for more than three decades.

The “Back to the Future” star, who was diagnosed with the progressive brain disorder in 1991, admitted that he has moments of depression and uncertainty. However, Fox said he focuses on staying optimistic even during his most challenging times.

“The positivity is really sincere. I really feel it, and it’s genuine,” Fox, 62, previously told “CBS Mornings.” “But it’s hard-fought, and it’s hard-won, I should say.”

“We can find ways to just give ourselves a break, give ourselves credit for getting through life on life’s terms,” he continued. “And, in order to do that, you have to stop and say, ‘It’s not that bad. It’s not that bad.'”

“They say the absence of fear is faith.”

In 1998, Fox publicly revealed his diagnosis for the first time. After retiring from acting, Fox dedicated himself to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, a nonprofit he co-founded in 2000 to help find a cure. The foundation has led to more than a dozen clinical trials and therapeutic programs and is a resource for those who have been previously diagnosed or are newly diagnosed.

Fox turned his negative health crisis into a positive as the Canadian native was determined to spread awareness about Parkinson’s.

“They didn’t have money. They didn’t have a voice,” Fox told the outlet. “And I thought, ‘Well, I could step in for these people and raise some hell.’”

Over the years, the Michael J. Fox Foundation has raised more than $2 billion for research and development of better treatments for people living with Parkinson’s. In April, an international team of researchers conducted a clinical study led by Fox’s foundation that resulted in a breakthrough in the understanding and treatment of Parkinson’s.

JEFF BRIDGES TALKS ‘THE BIG LEBOWSKI’ AND HIS TERRIFYING NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE

Oscar-winning actor Jeff Bridges has candidly spoken out about his health battle.

Bridges, 73, previously revealed to AARP magazine that the tumor from his cancer has shrunk “to the size of a marble.”

He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2020 while on a COVID-19 pandemic-mandated break from filming the FX series “The Old Man.”

Bridges first noticed an issue while he was working out.

“I was doing some exercises while on the ground and felt what seemed like a bone in my stomach. I thought to myself, hmm. But it didn’t hurt or anything. I asked [my wife] Sue what she thought. She said, ‘I don’t know, but you’ve got to get it checked out.'” he said.

The “Crazy Heart” star said that because he wasn’t in pain, he was reluctant to see a doctor.

While facing another health battle with COVID-19 in 2021, the now-73-year-old actor credited his wife for standing by his side through his near-fatal experience.

Bridges said he came very close to dying due to a weakened immune system from the chemotherapy.

“For me,” Bridges told the outlet, “cancer was nothing compared to the COVID.”

The “Big Lebowski” star thanked his wife, who was also temporarily hospitalized with COVID, for helping him through his five-week hospitalization and long recovery.

“My wife, Sue, was my absolute champion,” he said.

“She really fought to keep me off a ventilator. I didn’t want to be on it, and the doctors didn’t necessarily want that. But Sue was adamant.”

SAM NEILL ASSURES FANS HE’S ‘ALIVE AND WELL’ AND IN REMISSION AFTER CANCER NEWS

“Jurassic Park” star Sam Neill had an emotional moment with his fans over his battle with aggressive cancer.

In October, Neill, 76, tearfully apologized for worrying friends and fans and set the record straight on recent remarks he made about his cancer treatment.

Neill previously told Australia Today that he had been in remission for 12 months due to positive effects of a rare anti-cancer drug, but doctors had informed him that it would eventually stop working.

“I made a passing remark that the treatment I’m on, which has me in remission, will inevitably fail one day. Well, that’s what happens. It’s nothing to worry about,” Neill said in a social media video.

“I’ll bore you all to death with lots more work and, at such time as it does fail, we’re trying something else,” Neill added. “There’s all sorts of things that are happening with cancer these days. It’s a whole new ball game.”

“So, please stop worrying,” he said while tearing up. “I’m getting a lot of messages on social media and from friends. I’m sorry to worry everybody. It’s all good, it’s all fine. It’s a beautiful day. I’m off to work and look how gorgeous those geraniums are in the background.”

Earlier this year, Neill revealed he had been diagnosed with stage 3 blood cancer in March 2022. Back then, he called the illness “ferocious,” and in a recent interview he admitted that while he’s not sure exactly how much time he has left, he’s not scared of dying.

While he spoke to the television program “Australian Story,” Neill detailed his diagnosis of angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, saying he was in “a fight for my life.” He underwent a few months of “brutal” chemotherapy, something he said stripped him of “any kind of dignity.”

His doctor, Orly Lavee, appeared on the show to explain that before he was even done with the first round of chemo, the cancer proved to be resistant to the treatment and became even more aggressive. She said many patients choose to stop treatments if this happens, but Neill was “quite keen” on keeping up the fight.

SHANNEN DOHERTY ‘DOING OK’ AFTER REVEALING CANCER HAS SPREAD TO BRAIN; CELEBRITY FRIENDS SHOW SUPPORT

“Beverly Hills, 90210” star Shannen Doherty has remained positive in her fight with cancer.

Doherty, 52, has shown no signs of slowing down as she spoke out about her cancer battle during public events.

During a panel at ‘90s Con in September, the “Charmed” actress became emotional, telling the crowd, “Thank you so much,” according to People magazine. “You guys know how much I love crying constantly. And I do, it seems. So, thank you.”

The actress went on to give an update on her health as she battles stage 4 breast cancer: “I have a fight for my life that I deal with every day. I think I am really great.”

She revealed that her breast cancer was back and had spread to her brain with a post on social media in June. Doherty’s doctors found metastases, which she called mets, on her brain on Jan. 5, and the actress began radiation on Jan. 12.

Doherty has shown resilience throughout her health battle, especially with the help of fans, celebrity friends and co-stars, including Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Her longtime friend, Gellar, outlined exactly why Doherty embodies “a warrior.”

“She’s incredible. … When they say a warrior, she is a warrior,” Gellar previously told “Access Hollywood.”

“And she lives every day, and she’s fighting.”

Happy 81st birthday, Mr. President. (I always know when Biden’s birthday is because it’s the same as one of my kids.)

He didn’t have a big celebration yesterday, unless you consider pardoning turkeys a whole lot of fun – for obvious reasons.

Yet plenty of news outlets used the peg for their is-Biden-too-old pieces., and NBC didn’t deliver much of a birthday present with a poll showing Biden at his lowest approval rating of 40%.

Politico reported that when donors asked how to deal with the issue, his deputy campaign manager said to focus on Biden’s historic accomplishments, a response that “was well-received by those who see his age as a mark of his deep experience – and met with disagreement by others, who fear not enough is being done to remind voters that former President Donald Trump is just three-and-a-half years younger.”

BIDEN CRACKS AGE JOKE ON 81ST BIRTHDAY, THEN CONFUSES TAYLOR SWIFT, BEYONCE

Even close allies “believe that Biden is mentally up for the job, but some acknowledge that the president can at times appear frail.” You think?

Some want more joking about Grandpa Joe – Biden said yesterday “it’s difficult turning 60.”

“I think everyone knows it’s an issue, and we have to address it,” former chief of staff Ron Klain is quoted as saying. The White House should emphasize that “it gives him more wisdom and experience, how he’s navigated this difficult problem in Ukraine.”

A CAPITAL PROTEST COUNTERS ANTISEMITISM AS ISRAELI TROOPS ENTER GAZA HOSPITAL

Speaking of war, 70% of Democrats in that NBC survey disapprove of Biden’s handling of Israel’s bloody conflict with Hamas. This reflects a deepening divide within the Democratic Party, especially among its youngest voters. In fact, the president’s approval rating among those 18 to 34 has dropped to 31%.

Among Democratic voters overall, 51% say Israel has gone too far, while 27% believe Israel’s military actions are justified.

By any objective measure, Biden has done well balancing rock-solid support, including his trip to Israel after it was brutally attacked by Hamas, with urging restraint as the Gaza death toll soars, but if you view Israel as a terrorist oppressor, your view of the president’s role is going to be negative as well.

And the sour icing on the cake, so to speak: Trump edges Biden by 2 points in a 2024 matchup.

There’s even a companion Politico piece on how Democrats are coping with all this bad news (in part by rationalizing that he was underestimated in 2020).

Now look at this contrast in yesterday’s Washington Post, which, along with the New York Times, has repeatedly been warning of the dangers of a second Trump term.

TRUMP VS. BIDEN: A DRAMATIC DIFFERENCE IN HOW THE MEDIA TREAT EACH CAMPAIGN

“No president has ever attracted more public detractors who were formerly in his inner circle. They are closely watching his rise — cruising in the GOP nomination contest and, in most polls, tying or even leading President Biden in a general election matchup — with alarm. Among them are his former vice president, top military advisers, lawyers, some members of his Cabinet, economic advisers, press officials and campaign aides, some of whom are working for other candidates.”

Most of the facts here are previously known – the story is true – but the retelling builds a case that not all the criticism is coming from political opponents. Some, including former Trump lawyers Jenna Ellis and Sidney Powell, are trashing their former boss in exchange for guilty pleas and no jail time in the Georgia election fraud case.

Perhaps the most interesting commentary comes from Trump’s second chief of staff, retired general John Kelly:

“I came out and told people the awful things he said about wounded soldiers, and it didn’t have half a day’s bounce. You had his attorney general Bill Barr come out, and not a half a day’s bounce. If anything, his numbers go up. It might even move the needle in the wrong direction. I think we’re in a dangerous zone in our country.”

The response from the former president’s spokesman Steven Cheung is purely Trumpian: “These media whores are always looking for their next grift — whether it’s book deals or cable news contracts — because they know their entire worth as human beings revolve(sic) around talking about President Trump.”

One thing is certain: No matter the twists and turns of the campaign, including Trump’s criminal trials, there is one issue that by definition cannot go away, and that is Biden’s age. At least, from his standpoint, he won’t have another birthday before the next election.

Backers of a proposal to change Ohio’s troubled political mapmaking system will finally be able to start gathering signatures, after clearing a second round of state approvals Monday.

Citizens Not Politicians now has until July 3 to collect roughly 414,000 signatures required to put its constitutional amendment before voters in November 2024. Supporters are expected to fan out across the state beginning this week to try to make next fall’s statewide ballot.

Their proposal would replace the current Ohio Redistricting Commission, made up of three statewide officeholders and four state lawmakers, with an independent body selected directly by citizens. The new panel’s members would be diversified by party affiliation and geography.

OHIO VOTERS APPROVE AMENDMENT ENSHRINING ABORTION ACCESS INTO STATE CONSTITUTION

The effort has experienced repeated delays. It began with two early rounds of objections to their petition language by Republican Attorney General Dave Yost before wording was initially certified. The Ohio Ballot Board then unanimously cleared the measure in October, only for organizers to discover they had made a single-digit typo in a date.

The mistake sent the process back to the drawing board: first, back through Yost’s office; then back through the ballot board, which again OK’d the measure as a single issue Monday.

CITIZEN-LED REDISTRICTING INITIATIVE GETS NOD TO GATHER SIGNATURES FOR OHIO BALLOT

The campaign said supporters of changing redistricting are eager to get started circulating petitions. Among them is Nadia Zaiem, of the Cleveland suburb of Westlake, who said she’s motivated to see a new way chosen for the drawing of Ohio’s legislative and congressional maps.

She said the current system allows politicians of both parties to “ignore the will of their constituents, knowing they will continue to be elected and re-elected, not because they have earned the support of a majority of voters, but because they have rigged the system in their favor.”

The effort follows the existing structure’s repeated failure to produce constitutional maps. During the protracted process for redrawing district boundaries to account for results of the 2020 Census, challenges filed in court resulted in two congressional maps and five sets of Statehouse maps being rejected as unconstitutionally gerrymandered.

Congolese businessman and opposition leader Moise Katumbi launched his presidential campaign on Monday, five years after the regime in power at the time blocked him from running.

Katumbi’s rally in the city of Kisangani came a day after his two main competitors, President Felix Tshisekedi and opposition figure Martin Fayulu, started their campaigns ahead of the Dec. 20 vote.

Katumbi criticized Tshisekedi’s record in the country’s volatile east, where the army has been battling M23 rebels and other armed groups. Katumbi accused the president of recruiting foreign mercenaries instead of increasing the salaries of military and police, without offering evidence.

VOTE COUNTING BEGINS IN HEAVILY BOYCOTTED MADAGASCAR PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

“I’m telling you that we’re going to improve the conditions of our soldiers who have to defend our country, aren’t we? We’re going to add a bonus for our soldiers because we have a very strong republican army that has to finish the war,” he told the crowd.

Katumbi, the former governor of Katanga province, also rebuffed Tshisekedi’s insinuations Sunday that unspecified opposition candidates backed Rwanda. The neighboring country has been accused of funding and arming the M23 rebels, which its government denies.

Young people attending Katumbi’s rally said they were eager for change.

“They promised us security, but it hasn’t happened,” said Abdullah Simba. “They promised us jobs, but nothing has come. They promised to build roads, but nothing. They’ve done nothing good; that’s why we’re asking this government to pack its bags and leave.”

Representatives for Congolese opposition candidates including Katumbi met last week in South Africa, where they considered unifying behind a single challenger to Tshisekedi. Several candidates including former Prime Minister Augustin Matata Ponyo have withdrawn and thrown their support behind Katumbi.

But the businessman still faces challenges from Fayulu and Nobel Peace Prize winner Denis Mukwege, who plans to formally launch his campaign in the coming days. Kasai legislator Delly Sesanga is also running.

AT LEAST 44 VILLAGERS KILLED IN SEPARATE ATTACKS BY ISIS-LINKED CONGOLESE REBELS

In 2018, Katumbi attempted to run for president but was thwarted by President Joseph Kabila’s government, which canceled his Congolese passport while he was out of the country.

Tshisekedi was declared the winner of the 2018 vote when Kabila relinquished power under international pressure after 18 years. Fayulu, who also ran, maintained that he had won and challenged the result but lost.

With the accession of Tshisekedi, Katumbi’s passport was returned to him and he came to Kinshasa from exile in London.

Katumbi’s critics this time question his eligibility for the presidency, alleging his father was not a Congolese citizen. However, a top court last month threw out a lawsuit seeking to block him from running.

Los Angeles drivers returned to a much more normal commute Monday when an elevated stretch of a major freeway reopened well ahead of original estimates following a raging arson fire that shut down the roadway for more than a week.

The section of Interstate 10 south of downtown reopened Sunday night, and authorities assured commuters that the freeway is safe after emergency work to shore up the structure until permanent repairs of scorched support columns can be completed.

“Yes, the 10 is open,” declared Laura Rubio-Cornejo, general manager of the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, during a morning briefing on the status of the interstate, which carries about 300,000 vehicles a day and connects to other major routes.

FIRE AT LOS ANGELES INTERSTATE PUTS PUBLIC SCRUTINY ON STOCKPILING OF FLAMMABLE MATERIALS

The early morning inferno on Nov. 11 was fed by flammable materials stored under the roadway in violation of a company’s lease.

Initial worst-case scenarios raised the possibility that the section of freeway might have to be demolished and rebuilt. Officials then said tests showed it could be repaired in three to five weeks and that, with massive bracing in place, traffic could return much sooner.

Officials said last week that all lanes were expected to reopen by Tuesday, but moved it up after significant progress during around-the-clock work.

“It wasn’t just speed that we were after. We wanted to make sure this thing was safe,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said at a Sunday news conference, joined by Vice President Kamala Harris, U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla and Mayor Karen Bass.

“This is a great day in our city,” Bass said. “Let me thank everyone who worked 24 hours to make this effort happen.”

Most of the repair work will be done underneath the road deck, but future lane closures were possible, officials said. Some freeway ramps and nearby streets remained closed, but traffic officers were deployed in the area to direct traffic.

The Federal Highway Administration last week provided $3 million in “quick release” funds to repair the damage and said additional funds would be available from its emergency relief program.

Investigators have not said how the fire was started. On Saturday, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and the state fire marshal’s office said they’re seeking help locating a “person of interest” and released two photos on social media showing a man in his 30s with a brace on his right knee and apparent burn injuries on his left leg.

State investigators had identified fire and safety hazards at a leased storage space under the interstate several times before it burned in the fire, documents show. The California Department of Transportation, or Caltrans, released the documents Friday.

The blaze was fed by pallets, cars, construction materials, hand sanitizer and other items being stored under the freeway as part of a program that now is under scrutiny. Newsom has said the state will reassess the practice of leasing such lands.

Apex Development Inc. has leased the land under I-10 since 2008. Although one condition of the contract stipulated that it not allow the storage of flammable or hazardous materials there, state inspectors have visited the site six times since early 2020 and flagged problematic conditions for years.

“This is a filthy unmaintained lease,” inspector Daryl Myatt wrote in a 2022 report after a surprise inspection discovered solvents, oils, fuels and other items barred by the agreement. “This area has been utilized since the mid-1970s and looks like it.”

Owners of two of the companies that subleased the property said they also had warned of a fire danger and other hazards related to homeless people living under the freeway. Newsom previously said that while subleasing can be legal if the company received permission from state and federal regulators, Apex did not.

In September, state officials filed a lawsuit against Apex saying it owes $78,000 in unpaid rent. A hearing is scheduled next year.

The state’s most recent spot inspection, a little more than a month before the Nov. 11 fire, found “numerous lease violations,” but the documents released Friday didn’t elaborate.

Caltrans had “informed Apex Development of the need to address violations, especially those creating safety hazards,” the agency said in a statement.

LOS ANGELES FREEWAY FIRE, WHICH ENDANGERED 16 PEOPLE, LEADS TO RENEWED CALLS TO ADDRESS HOMELESS CRISIS

Mainak D’Attaray, an attorney for Apex Development, said Wednesday that the company is not to blame for the fire, adding the company hasn’t been able to access the premises since October.

“Apex rented and improved the rundown yard and made substantial capital investments during the period that it had possession of the yard,” D’Attaray’s statement added. “Caltrans inspected the premises periodically, at least once a year, and CalTrans was fully aware of the sublessees and their operations. Even the State of California’s Fire Marshall inspected the premises.”

D’Attaray did not respond to a request for comment Saturday.

Izzy Gardon, a spokesperson for the governor, last week disagreed with D’Attaray’s statement that Apex is not to blame. Gardon said that Cal Fire believes it was caused by arson “in a fenced-off area that Apex was responsible for maintaining while they continued to assert rights under the lease.”

No injuries were reported in the fire, but at least 16 homeless people living in an encampment there were taken to shelters.

A man was fatally shot by police at a New Hampshire home early Monday morning during a disturbance that triggered a shelter-in-place order in the area, the state attorney general’s office said.

Members of the New Hampshire State Police SWAT Team were directed to a home in Franklin for a report of “a barricaded suspect following an armed disturbance in the area,” the office said in a news release.

The shelter-in-place order was issued overnight for residents in the area of Central and West Bow streets. The order has since been lifted, the office said.

Life-saving measures were attempted after the man was shot, but he died at the scene. His identity has been withheld pending notification of family, the attorney general’s office said.

The names of the officers involved in the shooting were not immediately released.

No police officers were hurt and there is no threat to the public, the office said.
