Things didn’t start off well for Indy after they missed a field goal on their first possession and had a punt blocked. The Steelers capitalized on both with touchdowns to go up 13-0.

But the Colts’ defense stepped up and held Pittsburgh scoreless the remainder of the afternoon.

Indianapolis was up 14-13 at halftime. Early in the third, the Colts forced a fumble inside Pittsburgh’s 20-yard line, and Gardner Minshew found Mo Alie-Cox for a touchdown. Indianapolis then kicked two field goals to go up 27-13.

The win did come at a cost, though. Michael Pittman Jr. suffered a concussion after a nasty hit, and Zack Moss left the game with an arm injury he suffered on a rushing touchdown.

In place of Moss, Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson combined for 157 yards on 26 carries. Minshew went 18-for-28 with 215 yards and touchdowns to Moss, Allie-Cox and D.J. Montgomery.

Mitch Trubisky struggled for Pittsburgh, and Mason Rudolph entered the game with roughly two minutes left.

With the loss, the Steelers dropped five spots in the standings and are now 12th in the AFC despite being 7-7.

Indianapolis travels to Atlanta to play the Falcons on Christmas Eve, while the Steelers face the Bengals.

Democrat Karl Frisch was sworn in for his second term on the Fairfax County School Board with a stack of books banned in other school systems for sexually controversial content Thursday.

“He was sworn in on a stack of the five LGBTQ-themed books most frequently banned by other school systems,” Frisch’s campaign website announced. “Currently, the Board’s Vice Chair, Frisch becomes its Chair on January 1. He is the first LGBTQ+ person elected to local office in Virginia’s largest county and one of only four openly LGBTQ+ school board members in the Commonwealth out of roughly 800 members.”

Frisch’s male partner held the stack of books as he was sworn in. The books included “All Boys Aren’t Blue,” “Gender Queer,” “Flamer,” “Lawn Boy” and “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.”

A local liberal blog, Blue Virginia, reported on the story and the video can be found on the Fairfax County Public Schools’ YouTube page.

PORTLAND PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO FACTOR IN GENDER IDENTITY, RACE INTO SCHOOL DISCIPLINE: ‘COMPLETELY BACKWARDS’

Multiple books, such as “Flamer” and “Gender Queer,” include controversial sexual imagery or material that has caused them to be restricted by other school districts.

“Flamer,” written by award-winning author and artist Mike Curato. Released in 2020, Curato’s work is a semi-autobiographical graphic novel set in 1995. It tells the story of a character who is bullied at a Boy Scouts summer camp for “acting in a manner considered stereotypical of gay men.” The graphic novel includes characters discussing pornography, erections, masturbation, penis size, and an illustration that depicts naked teenage boys.

The book courted controversy across the country, making the American Library Association’s list as one of the most “banned books” of 2022. The book has reportedly been challenged in at least 62 schools for its LGBTQ content and sexually explicit material.

Similarly, “Gender Queer” by Maia Kobabe has courted major controversy among America’s parents for being in public school libraries throughout the U.S. and has been challenged for its depictions and descriptions of oral sex as well as discussions on masturbation. The book also discusses Kobabe’s journey of self discovery towards identifying outside the “gender binary.”

Frisch’s ceremony appears to follow a possible trend of officials being sworn in on sexually explicit books banned by certain school systems.

A new Pennsylvania school board president was sworn into her position in early December with her hand on a stack of controversial books, including “Flamer” and “All Boys Aren’t Blue.”

Karen Smith, a Democrat who was re-elected to the school board on Nov. 7, was sworn in on Dec. 4 as the new Central Bucks school board president after a vote by the board. As Smith walked up to the podium to be sworn in, her husband followed her with the stack of books.

This comes just two months after Fairfax Country School Board faced another scandal when a pro-Palestinian board member opposed honoring the victims of the Hamas terror attacks on October 7.

During the meeting, Abrar Omeish rebuked the board for their “sneak attack” of inserting a moment of silence for victims of the surprise terrorist attack and Israel’s ensuing war against Hamas into the meeting’s agenda.

She also criticized members for using language in the brief commemoration that didn’t “represent all children.” She noted she had sought a “statement that represented everybody’s views,” implying frustration that the statement did not speak to the Palestinian struggle in any way.

A Georgia woman was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the physical, mental, and emotional abuse of her three stepchildren, according to officials.

Nora Rodgers pleaded guilty on Oct. 9 to nine counts of Cruelty to Children in the First degree, the Newton County District Attorney’s Office announced in a press release.

In October 2020, law enforcement responded to Rodgers’ home after a concerned relative reported her, according to the release. The children — ages nine, eight and six — were found with signs of physical abuse, including bruising and swelling.

The nine-year-old boy had a black eye and severe bruising on his legs and the eight-year-old girl had bruises covering her body and scrapes and marks from physical punishments.

The six-year-old girl suffered the most significant physical injuries, according to the district attorney’s office. She had scrapes, swelling and bruising covering her entire body, as well as a broken elbow. She also suffered severe internal injuries from the beatings, which could have led to her death and required treatment by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s trauma team.

The children were forced to do extreme bootcamp-style exercises, including running laps, doing squats with large logs from the yard and jumping jacks, for extended periods of time to the point of exhaustion and injury. Rodgers would often make them perform these exercises in the middle of the night and in the summer heat.

If the children failed to perform the exercises to Rodgers’ standards, she would beat them.

The Department of Family and Children Services had previously told Rodgers she may not use exercise or corporal punishment, but that did not deter her.

The three children were also found malnourished, as Rodgers would underfeed them and withhold food as a form of punishment. She would impose time limits for them to eat their meals and she would blend their solid foods into a drink, so they could eat faster.

Notably, Rodgers’ three biological children, who were also living in the home, were not subjected to the same feeding restrictions or physical exercises as her stepchildren.

All six children were removed from the home and placed in foster care after law enforcement became involved.

During a sentencing hearing on Dec. 12, Rodgers was sentenced to 60 years on probation, with the first 30 years to be served in prison. Impact statements from the child victims, foster parents, a social worker, and the children’s grandmother explaining how Rodgers’ abuse affected the children were delivered during the hearing.

“The dedicated work of the prosecution team led to a result that guarantees that the victims will be well into adulthood before Rodgers gets out of prison,” District Attorney Randy McGinley said in a statement. “The DA’s Office sought justice for the victims but also that Rodgers would be in prison long enough that she could not harm these children or any other children. The prosecutors hard work led to a guilty plea with an appropriate sentence without the children having to testify at length and relive the abuse they faced.”

“A special thanks goes to the foster parents who cared for the children after their abuse and family of the children who reported the abuse,” the statement continued. “While Rodgers put herself above the well-being of the kids, so many others fought for them.”
