In 2023, the world witnessed a series of major disasters that caused widespread destruction, tearing up homes and communities, and in many cases, taking lives. 

Here is a retrospective — but not exhaustive — look at some of 2023’s biggest natural disasters in the United States and around the world. 

TURKEY-SYRIA EARTHQUAKE – FEB. 6, 2023 

In early February, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Syria and Turkey, followed by a series of powerful aftershocks that lasted for days. The United Nations later estimated that the temblors killed around 50,000 people — the vast majority of whom were in Turkey. 

The shaking toppled thousands of buildings and heaped more misery on a region wracked by Syria’s 12-year civil war and refugee crisis. Many blamed lax building codes in Turkey, as well as a slow government response there, for exacerbating the crisis. 

LIBYA FLOODS – SEPT. 4-12, 2023

A massive rainstorm overwhelmed two dams in Libya and sent water rushing down to the eastern city of Derna. Entire neighborhoods full of people were washed into the sea. 

Many blamed the country’s inability to respond to the disaster on a government that’s been divided for the past decade. Rival administrations are backed by international patrons and armed militias whose influence in the country has ballooned since a NATO-backed Arab Spring uprising toppled autocratic ruler Moammar Gadhafi in 2011. 

MOROCCO EARTHQUAKE – SEPT. 8, 2023 

A 6.8 earthquake struck Morocco’s Atlas Mountains in early September, killing an estimated 2,900 people. The region’s mud-brick homes left those trapped underneath with little air and hindered rescue operations. 

HAWAII FIRE WILDFIRES – AUG. 8-11, 2023

A wildfire tore through the Hawaiian island of Maui in early August, reducing much of the historic town of Lahaina to ash and forcing people to jump into the ocean to flee the flames. Approximately 100 people were killed. 

This month, Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said he was requesting $425 million from lawmakers during the next fiscal year to help Maui recover from the wildfires. 

HURRICANE IDALIA – AUG. 26-31, 2023

The year saw 20 storms in the Atlantic basin — the fourth-highest total since 1950. Seven of these became hurricanes, and three intensified into major hurricanes. 

The most powerful of these was Hurricane Idalia, which made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane along the Florida Gulf Coast and produced more than 80% of the season’s damage. 

Ophelia affected the U.S. East Coast all the way up to New England. There were also multiple hurricane landfalls across Mexico, including Hurricane Otis, a Category 5 storm which devastated Acapulco and killed dozens.

One person was injured at a hospital in Virginia when a man who had come to the facility for a mental health evaluation Friday began shooting, police said.

Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards told reporters that a 911 call came in at 4:11 a.m. of shots fired at Chippenham Hospital. Officers who were already in the emergency room responded and found one adult male with critical, but not life-threatening, gunshot wounds.

The suspect surrendered and was taken into custody. Edwards said that a Chesterfield police officer who was also at the hospital for an unrelated reason had returned fire with his weapon during the incident, but the suspect was not injured.

Edwards said the suspect in the shooting is a 27-year-old man from Glen Allen, Virginia. He had come to the hospital on his own for a mental health evaluation. He was armed and began shooting shortly after he arrived. His motive was unclear.

“He was entering a room where he was disrobing and getting into a gown and then without warning starting firing his weapon,” Edwards said. Another patient in a hallway was hit, he said.

A wave of gun violence has swept through U.S. hospitals and medical centers, which have struggled to adapt to the growing threats.

Such attacks have helped make health care one of the nation’s most violent fields. Data shows American health care workers now suffer more nonfatal injuries from workplace violence than workers in any other profession, including law enforcement.

Similar shootings have played out in hospitals across the country including one in the lobby of New Hampshire state psychiatric hospital last month that left a security guard dead.

Edwards said the charges would be filed against the man after consulting with prosecutors.

He said sometimes officers work extra duty at the hospital, but there wasn’t one stationed there at the time of the shooting.

“It was just luck that we had officers there on an unrelated call and they were able to respond rapidly, ” Edwards said.

Hough revealed on Dec. 7 that Erbert, a “DWTS” professional dancer, became “disoriented” after performing and needed to be hospitalized. She was then diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel and required an emergency craniectomy.

According to the Mayo Clinic, “An intracranial hematoma is a collection of blood within the skull. It’s usually caused by a blood vessel that bursts in the brain.” 

The “Dancing with the Stars” judge previously praised his wife for her strength and resilience only days after requiring emergency brain surgery.

“Hayley has always inspired me with her will, her strength, and her resilience and no more so than in the last 48 hrs,” Hough wrote on Instagram. “She is now on the long road of recovery. Words cannot express how grateful and thankful we are for the support and love that you have given us.”

Erbert and Hough were married in August before embarking on their “Symphony of Dance” tour.

Santa Claus is having some fun before the holiday season.

During Madonna’s Celebration Tour stop in Washington, D.C., Tuesday night, the singer incorporated her backup dancers and a white-bearded man, dressed in a red suit, into one of her performances.

One of Madonna’s dancers approached Santa to perform a lap dance when things took a turn. Once the female dancer got on top of him, both Claus and the dancer took a fall forward.

Madonna was nearby when the fall occurred, and she checked in on the jolly man, handing him back his red hat. In the video, it seems Santa was judging the backup dancer’s performances and was holding judging cards during Madonna’s set.

The dancer involved in the fall didn’t miss a beat. She got right back up and continued her performance while Santa gathered his belongings scattered across the stage.

Madonna’s Celebration Tour kicked off in October. During the singer’s stop at Barclay’s Center last week, she revealed she was put into a medically induced coma while hospitalized over the summer.

“I was in an induced coma for 48 hours,” Madonna told the crowd in a video captured by a fan. The musician, 65, revealed her Kabbalah teacher was by her side throughout the coma. 

“The only voice I heard was his. I heard him say, ‘Squeeze my hand,'” she said.

“When I first became conscious, and I saw my six incredible children sitting around me — by the way, I had to almost die to get all my kids in one room.”

Madonna claimed her friend Shavawn “saved [her] life” after the “Material Girl” singer passed out in her bathroom. 

“There are some very important people in the room tonight that were with me at the hospital. There’s one very important woman who dragged me to the hospital,” Madonna said. “I don’t even remember. I passed out on my bathroom floor and woke up in the ICU.”

Before her current tour, Madonna was hospitalized June 24 for a “serious infection.”

Barkley, who played three seasons at Auburn from 1981 to 1984, was sitting courtside during the USC-Auburn men’s basketball game when he did an interview with ESPN. 

It was there where he made the connection between supporting Alabama to Afghanistan.

“Hey, you know how much I love Coach Saban and Alabama. I mean, I don’t like Alabama, I like Coach Saban. Winning with backups should have gave you brownie points, not penalize you. If we’re going to play sports now where it only matters if you’re using your starters, I don’t want to be in that world. They won three games with a backup and another backup. To be honest with you, I’m really looking forward to the playoffs now that I went on my rant.

“I have zero idea who’s going to win those two games because we got four elite teams, and I’m going to be watching.”

Barkley said he wouldn’t pick a winner of the national championship, but clearly the Crimson Tide is last on his list.

Barkley may be rooting for Florida State instead because they will take on the Georgia Bulldogs, who Alabama defeated in the SEC Championship to get into the playoff. Georgia was the No. 1 seed and undefeated until losing to Saban’s group.
