Novak Djokovic wasn’t taking any chances this weekend. 

The Serbian tennis star showed up to the Foro Italico in Rome on Saturday sporting a bicycle helmet as he signed autographs for fans with a smile. 

“Today I came prepared,” he said in a post on social media.

The decision to wear protective gear followed a scary scene at the Italian Open just a day earlier. 

After a 6-3, 6-1 win over French qualifier Corentin Moutet, Djokovic was exiting the clay court when he stopped to sign autographs for fans. That’s when an aluminum water bottle fell from the crowd above, hitting Djokovic directly on the top of his head. 

He collapsed to the ground where he appeared to hold his head for several minutes before eventually exiting the court.

“While leaving center court after his match, Novak Djokovic was hit on the head by a water bottle while signing autographs. He received medical attention and has already left the Foro Italico to return to his hotel. His condition is not a cause for concern,” organizers said in a statement.

Djokovic released a statement of his own on X calling the incident an “accident.” 

“Thank you for the messages of concern. This was an accident and I am fine resting at the hotel with an ice pack. See you all on Sunday.”

Tournament organizers later shared a video revealing that a fan leaning over to greet Djokovic was responsible for the incident. Video showed the water bottle falling out of a backpack he was wearing as he leaned over the stands. 

Despite it all, Djokovic, 36, appeared to be in good spirits as he arrived at the sports facility in Rome on Saturday. He won his first match on Friday after taking nearly a month off.

The arrival this weekend of Mother’s Day 2024 means millions of Americans are planning to celebrate their moms in one special way or another.

For some, Mother’s Day means cooking a homemade meal, maybe even serving breakfast in bed. 

Florida-based celebrity chef Robert Irvine of “Restaurant: Impossible” fame shared a waffle croque madame recipe with Fox News Digital and said it’s one of his favorite breakfasts.

Irvine said that, to him, Mother’s Day screams breakfast in bed as a way of pampering the person who means so much to everyone in the family. 

“That should start with serving her a uniquely delicious meal, not something that is part of the regular breakfast rotation in your house,” he said.

Here’s how to make his waffle croque madame recipe. 

Makes 4 servings

2 large eggs

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 ¾ cups milk

½ cup vegetable oil

1 tablespoon granulated sugar

4 teaspoons baking powder

¼ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon vanilla extract

1 stick butter

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 quart whole milk

2 cups shredded white cheddar cheese

1 cup Parmesan cheese

1 teaspoon nutmeg

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 lb. thinly sliced ham

4 tablespoons whole grain mustard

3 tablespoons grapeseed oil

4 eggs

1. Pre-heat a waffle iron.

2. In a mixing bowl, use a hand mixer to beat the eggs for about 2 minutes until flurry.

3. Beat in flour, milk, vegetable oil, sugar, baking powder, salt and vanilla extract. Ensure all ingredients are incorporated and the mixture is smooth.

4. Spray the preheated waffle iron with nonstick spray and pour the mixture onto the waffle iron. Cook until golden brown.

1. Melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat.

2. Using a whisk, add flour to the melted butter. Whisk until smooth and allow it to cook for about 9 minutes. The roux should be light brown.

3. Using a whisk, slowly incorporate the milk. It should be thickened by the roux.

4. Increase the heat and allow the mixture to lightly simmer for about 5 minutes.

5. Drop the heat to medium-low and incorporate shredded cheddar, Parmesan cheese, nutmeg and cayenne pepper.

6. Season with salt and pepper and set aside.

1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add sliced ham and allow it to warm through for about 2 minutes. Remove it from the pan and set it aside.

2. Add grapeseed oil and crack an egg into the pan. Cook this for about 3 minutes. The white of the egg should be cooked through, and the yolk should still be runny. Season with salt and pepper and set aside.

3. Place the warm waffle on the bottom of the plate.

4. Top the waffle with the sliced ham and pour the cheese sauce over the ham. Top with a cooked egg and whole grain mustard.

5. Enjoy!

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas said Friday at a judicial conference that he and his wife have been subjected to “nastiness” and “lies” over the past several years and criticized Washington, D.C., as a “hideous place.”

Thomas delivered remarks at a conference attended by judges, attorneys and other court personnel at the 11th Circuit Judicial Conference. The justice was answering a question about working in a world that appears to be mean-spirited when he pushed back on his critics.

“I think there’s challenges to that,” Thomas said. “We’re in a world and we — certainly my wife and I the last two or three years it’s been — just the nastiness and the lies, it’s just incredible.”

“But you have some choices,” he continued. You don’t get to prevent people from doing horrible things or saying horrible things. But one you have to understand and accept the fact that they can’t change you unless you permit that.”

Thomas, a conservative justice on the bench, has faced recent criticism over accusations that he accepted luxury trips from a GOP donor without reporting them. Last year, he maintained that he did not have to report the trips paid for by one of his friends.

His wife, conservative activist Ginni Thomas, has also been criticized for using her Facebook page to push claims that President Biden engaged in corruption.

Justice Thomas did not directly address the details of the criticisms, but he did say that “reckless” people in Washington, D.C., will “bomb your reputation.”

“They don’t bomb you necessarily, but they bomb your reputation or your good name or your honor,” he said. “And that’s not a crime. But they can do as much harm that way.”

Thomas was asked questions by U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle, who previously was a law clerk for Thomas.

The topics Thomas spoke about during his remarks included the lessons of his grandfather, his friendship with former colleagues and his belief that court writings and discussions should be more accessible for the public.

Thomas, the longest serving justice after being appointed to the bench in 1991, has spent most of his working life in Washington D.C., and expressed his distaste for the district.

“I think what you are going to find and especially in Washington, people pride themselves on being awful. It is a hideous place as far as I’m concerned,” Thomas said, adding that this is one of the reasons he and his wife like RVing.

“You get to be around regular people who don’t pride themselves in doing harmful things, merely because they have the capacity to do it or because they disagree,” he said.

A recreational vehicle used by Thomas also sparked controversy last year. In October, Senate Democrats issued a report saying most of the $267,000 loan Thomas obtained to purchase a high-end motorcoach appears to have been forgiven.

Thomas also said he believes it is important to use language in court rulings in a way that the average person can interpret the law.

“The regular people I think are being disenfranchised sometimes by the way that we talk about cases,” he said.
