Pat McAfee caught flack earlier this week when he referred to Caitlin Clark as a “White b—-.”

The punter-turned-media mogul was defending Clark’s impact on women’s basketball when he made what he says was a “massive f— up.”

McAfee said it was only hours after Monday’s show that he saw the criticism he received for his monologue, which prompted many on social media to accuse him of being “racist” or “sexist.”

That includes feminist group UltraViolet, which called for McAfee to be fired from ESPN.

“Pat McAfee’s apology for his racist and sexist comments about Caitlin Clark and other WNBA players is insufficient. The simple reality is that even if McAfee meant what he said as a compliment – he should know that referring to any professional athlete with a misogynistic or racial epithet is never a compliment and shouldn’t be done,” the group said in a statement.

“But it’s about more than just the specific words he chose to describe Caitlin Clark. His entire segment, which he has said he stands behind and doesn’t apologize for, was used to downplay the contributions of other WNBA rookies including Angel Reese, and perpetuate a dangerous narrative rooted in misogynoir that the WNBA, a league dominated by Black women for years is being ‘saved’ by Clark, when both profits and viewership have been on the rise prior to the start of this season.”

The group also said McAfee’s allowing “conspiracy theories” to be “spread” by Aaron Rodgers on his show “demonstrate[s] that McAfee simply does not have the necessary judgment that sports fans deserve.”

“Not only does McAfee deserve to be fired, but Disney needs to ensure that ESPN commits to a culture where commentators will no longer be allowed to spew sexist and racist remarks,” the group continued. “That should be the minimum standard that sports fans should expect from their commentators and that ESPN and Disney should expect from their hosts. It is hard to ask for anything less when we recall that ESPN is the same network that suspended Jemele Hill for calling President Trump a white supremacist.”

McAfee said he sent a personal apology to Clark through the Indiana Fever’s public relations team and heard back that “it was all good.”

“I meant it as a compliment. Those were my intentions. A lot of people didn’t take it that way. Caitlin Clark did not feel disrespected, but a lot of people said I was disrespecting her – that’s the complete opposite of what I was trying to do.”

Clark is averaging 15.4 points, 6.4 assists, and 5.1 rebounds on 35.7% from the floor (29.7% from deep) in 11 games this season.

Dairy cows infected with avian flu in five U.S. states have died or been slaughtered by farmers because they did not recover, state officials and academics told Reuters.

Reports of the deaths suggest the bird flu outbreak in cows could take a greater economic toll in the farm belt than initially thought. Farmers have long culled poultry infected by the virus, but cows cost much more to raise than chickens or turkeys.

A U.S. Department of Agriculture spokesperson said the agency knew of a few deaths but that the vast majority of cows recover well. Reuters was not able to determine the total number of cows with bird flu that died or were killed in South Dakota, Michigan, Texas, Ohio and Colorado.

WHO CONFIRMS FIRST HUMAN DEATH FROM A(H5N2) BIRD FLU

Avian flu has infected dairy cows in more than 80 herds across 10 states since late March, according to the USDA.

Some of the animals died of secondary infections contracted after bird flu weakened their immune systems, said state veterinarians, agriculture officials, and academics assisting in state responses to bird flu. Other cows were killed by farmers because they failed to recover from the virus.

Cattle infected with bird flu suffer reduced milk production, digestive issues, fever, and diminished appetite, according to farmers and veterinarians.

In South Dakota, a 1,700-cow dairy sent a dozen of the animals to slaughter after they did not recover from the virus, and killed another dozen that contracted secondary infections, said Russ Daly, a professor with South Dakota State University and veterinarian for the state extension office who spoke with the farm.

“You get sick cows from one disease, then that creates a domino effect for other things, like routine pneumonia and digestive issues,” Daly said.

A farm in Michigan killed about 10% of its 200 infected cows after they too failed to recover from the virus, said Phil Durst, an educator with Michigan State University Extension who spoke with that farm.

Michigan has more confirmed infections in cattle than any state as well as two of three confirmed cases of U.S. dairy workers who contracted bird flu.

In Colorado, some dairies reported culling cows with avian flu because they did not return to milk production, said Olga Robak, spokesperson for the state Department of Agriculture.

Ohio Department of Agriculture spokesperson Meghan Harshbarger said infected cows have died in Ohio and other affected states, mostly due to secondary infections.

The Texas Animal Health Commission also confirmed that cows have died from secondary infections at some dairy operations with avian flu outbreaks.

Officials could not provide figures for the number of statewide cow mortalities.

New Mexico’s state veterinarian, Samantha Uhrig, said farmers increasingly culled cows due to decreased milk production early in the outbreak, before the U.S. even confirmed bird flu was infecting cattle. Culling decreased as farmers learned that most cows gradually recovered, she said.

Officials in North Carolina and Kansas said there have been few to no cow deaths associated with bird flu in their states. Idaho officials did not respond to requests for information.

Bird flu virus particles were found in beef tissue taken from one dairy cow sent to be slaughtered for meat, and meat from the animal did not enter the food supply, USDA said last month.

The agency has reported that no viral particles were found in samples of ground beef collected at retail stores, and that no bird flu virus was found after cooking ground beef to medium to well done, after it was injected with a virus surrogate as part of an experiment.

“Wheel of Fortune” host Pat Sajak shared a heartfelt moment with his daughter Maggie Sajak as he prepares for his 43-year run as host of the hit game show to come to an end.

Since 2021, Maggie, 29, has worked alongside her father, 77, as the social correspondent for “Wheel of Fortune” and “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune.” Maggie produces digital content for the shows’ fans, including exclusive interviews, behind-the-scenes looks and special event sneak-peeks.

On Wednesday, the show’s Instagram account uploaded a clip from an interview Maggie did with Pat to commemorate his last week on the show. During the interview, Maggie playfully asked her father how he felt about working with his “favorite daughter,” to which he responded with a laugh.

“I like to say that I’ve had 40 years of a part-time job — pretending it was full-time,” he said. “I could watch you guys grow up and go to the games and all that kind of stuff that work might have taken me away from.”

He continued, “I mean, you’ve been a part of this show forever. I dragged you out when you were one year old and we were in Hawaii.”

In 1996, Maggie made her first TV appearance during an episode of “Wheel of Fortune,” joining her father onstage after marking her first birthday.

Prior to taking on her role as social correspondent, she filled in for legendary letter-turner Vanna White for a week in 2020 while White hosted the show in place of Pat as he underwent surgery.

In 2023, she once again stepped in for White as the letter-turner for “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune” during an episode in which White competed on the show.

Sajak noted that he had been able to spend even more time with his daughter after she became a full-time staff member on the show.

“Now when you’re working here, and I’m with three of my favorite ladies in the world,” he said. “When I’m here, I’m with you and your mother and Vanna, and it’s a pretty good life I got.”

“So you saw us a lot before, but, you know,” Maggie said.

“Yeah, but now I never get away from you,” he joked. “It’s funny. People — I bet they think that I stormed in one day and said, ‘I want my daughter to work on the show.’ I wish I could take the credit, but I had nothing to do with it.”

“I thought you demanded it,” she quipped.

“Yes, that’s what I did,” Sajak said as his daughter laughed. “I stormed in.”

“No, it’s been obviously such a pleasure for me — working with you,” she told him.

After more than four decades as host, Sajak’s final episode will air on Friday, June 7. The farewell episode was taped on April 5.

In June 2023, Sajak announced that he was exiting the show.

“Well, the time has come,” he wrote in a statement. “I’ve decided that our 41st season, which begins in September, will be my last. It’s been a wonderful ride, and I’ll have more to say in the coming months. Many thanks to you all. (If nothing else, it’ll keep the clickbait sites busy!).”

Soon after the news was released, it was announced that Ryan Seacrest would be taking over as host in Season 42.
