On social media, castor oil has become a popular trend for various uses, from hair growth to weight loss.

There have been millions of posts about the vegetable oil on TikTok, with many creators sharing how they’ve used it to improve their health.

In more controversial cases, creators have applied castor oil directly to their belly buttons — and have even taken to drinking it as a detox and weight-loss method, since the FDA has approved castor oil as a natural laxative.

While some people on the internet have reported positive results, experts are warning that castor oil consumption could be dangerous for overall health.

Registered dietitian Ilana Muhlstein told Fox News Digital she has “never heard of castor oil being used for anything other than its traditional applications.”

The Los Angeles-based expert assumed that a primary use is for short-term, mild weight loss, since castor oil acts as a laxative.

“Laxatives can dehydrate you and cause dependency,” she said. “There are much safer alternatives.”

She added, “If you’re having trouble in the bathroom, try increasing your water intake, adding more fiber to your diet and getting more exercise. Speak with your doctor or dietitian if you have any questions.”

Katrina Mattingly, M.D., chief medical officer at Option Medical Weight Loss in Chicago, said castor oil is a “tried-and-true, old-school laxative.”

She told Fox News Digital in an email, “The first thing that comes to mind is diarrhea.”

“I remember my 97-year-old grandmother giving it to us as kids, along with prune juice, when our GI systems needed help moving things along,” Mattingly said.

Castor oil “hastens our bodies’ elimination of solid waste products and also rids the body of essential water,” the expert noted.

While this can trigger weight loss, Mattingly said that “along with all the solid waste and essential water going down the toilet are essential vitamins and minerals, such as potassium and chloride” — which can lead to deficiencies.

While castor oil can be helpful in relieving occasional constipation, overusing it as a laxative can lead to the bowels becoming dependent on laxatives, Mattingly warned, “making it difficult to go naturally on your own.”

The obesity doctor emphasized that she would not recommend castor oil for weight loss in any capacity.

“Although castor oil has been in use for centuries for a variety of reasons, from body detoxification to vision problems to labor induction, there’s no safety data to recommend routine use for any of these conditions, except constipation,” she said.

Current scientific studies and research do not support its use solely for the purpose of weight loss, the doctor noted.

Mattingly said she would recommend ingesting castor oil in “small amounts” only for occasional bouts of constipation if it has worked in the past.

“Just remember to hydrate to replace the fluid loss, and if you have long-term or chronic constipation, that warrants a trip to your physician.”

Women’s health expert Dr. Mindy Pelz advocated for the use of castor oil packs to regulate organ function and move toxins through the body.

The California-based doctor claimed that castor oil can absorb through the skin and move into the organs “very easily.”

“When it goes into our system, it creates dilation,” Pelz said to Fox News Digital. “It’s so simple, and so inexpensive … You could just rub it over your liver and gallbladder. You need castor oil to stay on there for two hours for it to … start to dilate these organs.”

Pelz recommended applying castor oil at night, up to three times a week, for a “massive detox that opens the whole system up.”

Mattingly, however, countered that castor oil “does not show promise in having inflammatory, antimicrobial properties or antioxidant properties.”

And while viral social media claims are often based on personal experiences, Mattingly noted that certain applications may not have the same effect on everyone.

“When it comes to medical weight loss, leave that to the experts to ensure you are undergoing a safe and effective plan that won’t leave you miserable or taking that dreaded trip to the ER,” she advised.

There are a few traditional applications for castor oil, including applying it to the scalp or eyelashes to promote hair growth, as well as using it on the belly button for better sleep, Muhlstein said.

“Some people say it helps ease muscle tension and promotes deeper sleep,” she said. “Just be cautious,” she added, “because I’ve heard that using too much of it can make you feel lethargic.”

Another potential use for castor oil is as a topical treatment for skin irritations or scars, Muhlstein added.

“People have reported positive results,” she said. “So, if you’ve got any annoying skin issues, it might be worth giving it a try, but always consult with a dermatologist for bigger issues.”

Mattingly recommended rubbing castor oil on your stomach or skin as a moisturizer only — but not for weight loss.

“Also, castor oil can have an unforgettable smell,” she warned. “So be prepared for this, particularly if using it on the face or hair.”

A 40-year-old man was stabbed to death inside a subway station in New York City, police said.

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) confirmed with Fox News Digital that law enforcement responded to a 911 call at a subway station in Washington Heights at 6 p.m. on Friday evening.

Authorities said that stabbing happened near the subway turnstile.

NYPD said the 40-year-old victim was repeatedly stabbed in the torso.

Police and Mayor Eric Adams, a former transit officer himself, have suggested some links between fare-skipping and violence on the trains.

In March, a man was shot in the head with his own gun after a brawl in a packed subway car. The man who was armed with the gun had walked through an emergency gate and did not pay his fare, police said.

Jihadi fighters who had long operated in Africa’s volatile Sahel region have settled in northwestern Nigeria after crossing from neighboring Benin, a report said Wednesday, the latest trend in the militants’ movements to wealthier West African coastal nations.

The extremists believed to be linked to al-Qaida have in the last year crossed over from Benin’s hard-hit northern region and settled in Kainji Lake National Park, one of Nigeria’s largest, where other armed groups have also gained access, according to the report by the Clingendael Institute think tank, which has done extensive research in the Sahel.

Residents close to the park told The Associated Press that the facility, which holds one of West Africa’s fast-declining lion populations, has been closed for more than a year because of security threats from armed groups attacking neighboring villages and roads.

“Before, it was like a tourism center (but) now, people find it difficult to pass through there,” said John Yerima, who lives near the park in New Bussa town. “You cannot enter that road (leading to the park) now. It is dangerous, seriously.”

The security situation at the 2,000-square mile park in Niger state and along the nearby border with Benin is “getting out of hand” and is “a much more explosive situation than we had anticipated,” said Kars de Bruijne, one of the authors of the report and a senior research fellow at the institute.

The “sustained presence” of the armed groups in the park is the first sign of a connection between Nigeria’s homegrown extremists that have launched a decadelong insurgency in its northern region, and al-Qaida-linked militants from the Sahel, the vast arid expanse south of the Sahara Desert, Bruijne said.

Their presence offers an opportunity for the extremists to claim large-scale success in both countries, already wracked by deadly attacks in recent years, he added.

Known as a global hot spot for violent extremism, the Sahel region’s worsening security crisis comes as military coups are toppling democratic governments. As the military governments struggle to contain the violence, they are increasingly severing security with traditional partners France and the United States and turning to Russia for support.

In northwest Nigeria, security analysts have in the past warned that the region’s remote territories, where the government is largely absent but have rich mineral resources and high poverty levels, present an opportunity for expansion for jihadi groups that had operated mainly in the Sahel, as well as the Islamic State group, whose fighters hold sway in the Lake Chad basin.

“A link between Lake Chad and the Sahel is a major opportunity for al-Qaida and the Islamic State to boast about their profiles as leaders of global jihad,” the report said.

There are also concerns from conservationists that the presence of armed groups in the park could further threaten the remaining lions whose populations have declined as a result of poaching and climate change. They say the park and most protected wildlife areas in Nigeria are poorly patrolled, making them easy targets for armed groups.

“The security situation has become top of the list when it comes to the concerns about the lion populations in Nigeria,” said Stella Egbe, senior conservation manager at the Nigerian Conservation Foundation.

The Nigerian military often conducts aerial bombardments and deploys its personnel in criminal hideouts in the conflict-battered northern region. However, security forces — fatigued by the decadelong war in the northeast — are still outnumbered and outgunned in those remote villages, and the root causes of the conflict such as poverty remain.

The Clingendael report said it is unclear what the motive of the Sahel extremists in the park is and what their relationship with other armed groups there will be. Security analysts say it offers opportunities for logistics and more influence amid booming illegal trade across the porous border.

“The Sahelian jihadis potentially can try to use northwestern Nigeria as a place for fundraising, for logistics and to try to influence the jihadi groups there as part of their own competition,” said James Barnett, a fellow at the Hudson Institute whose works in northwestern Nigeria were cited in the report.

Across many villages in Nigeria’s northwest, banditry — not jihadi fighters — remains the major security threat, Barnett said.

The bandits have on a few occasions in the past collaborated with jihadi fighters as two separate groups in carrying out attacks. But even in rare collaborations, he said, there can be “very deadly consequences.”

A 3,300-year-old ancient sunken ship dating back to the Bronze Age has been discovered in the Mediterranean Sea at a depth where time has “frozen,” the Israel Antiquities Authority announced Thursday.

The agency, which describes the find as the “first and oldest wrecked ship discovered to date in the deep sea in the eastern Mediterranean,” says it was first spotted last year about 56 miles off Israel’s coastline by Energean, a natural gas company that was conducting a survey in the area.

“The ship appears to have been eroded as a result of a distress it got into in a sea storm, or perhaps in the event of an encounter with pirates — a phenomenon known from the Late Bronze Age,” Yaakov Sharavit, the director of the IAA’s Unit of Marine Archaeology, said in a statement.

“This is a world-class, historical-altering discovery,” Sharavit was also quoted by the Jerusalem Post as saying. “This find reveals to us as never before the ancient mariners’ navigational skills – capable of traversing the Mediterranean Sea without a line of sight of any coast.”

ANCIENT TREASURE AMONG 1,650-YEAR-OLD OBJECTS UNEARTHED IN ISRAEL

The ship’s remnants were found more than a mile below the surface at a depth “where time was frozen in the moment of disaster” and has been untouched by humans or currents that affect shipwrecks found in shallower waters, according to Sharavit. The IAA says it sank sometime between 1400 and 1300 B.C.

Sharavit says only two other Bronze Age shipwrecks have been discovered throughout history, both near Turkey.

Energean Environmental Team Leader Karnit Bachartan said the ship was found during the survey by an “advanced underwater robot.”

“We identified an unusual sight of what seemed to be a large cluster of jugs resting on the ground,” she said.

“Upon reviewing the site and mapping using the robot, it was clear that this was a shipwreck about 12 to 14 meters long, carrying hundreds of jugs that only some of them could be seen on the surface,” she added.

The rest of the ship appears to be buried deep in mud on the seafloor, researchers say.

The IAA says two of the jugs were later pulled from the depths to be examined for research purposes.

It added that the jugs are believed to have held oil, wine and other agricultural products.

FIRST ON FOX – An NPR correspondent repeatedly called for the law enforcement complex in America to be destroyed – believing it to be irreparably racist and beyond any reform.

Gene Demby is a correspondent who is focused on telling purportedly “Black Truths” at NPR’s culture wing where he espouses leftist views, including that America is “a country that’s built and defined by white supremacy.” On his X account, where he calls himself “The LeBron James of Pig Feet,” Demby expresses his most extreme ideologies, notably that police don’t prevent crime and perpetuate “racist state violence.”

“Abolition means *no* policing because policing is an inherently destructive force,” he said in a June 2020 X post.

Demby made sure to point out that his perspective was more radical than activists who call for reform or to defund the police.

“‘Reform’ is different from abolition because it’s based on the idea that policing should exist, but simply modified – with more diverse police forces, with diff[erent] training, etc. But none of that interrupts the imperatives of policing,” the NPR correspondent said in an August 2020 X post.

“There are people pushing for defunding [because] it rolls back policing and other people pushing for defunding [because] that’s the practical way to abolition,” Demby continued. “[The movement] IS abolish the police.”

Demby said police have very little “vital function” in society.

“The police don’t solve violent crimes effectively. They don’t prevent crimes They don’t de-escalate situations, and they put people in contact with the criminal justice system for being poor. How are they helpful? what vital function do they serve besides social control?” he continued in the same thread.

He went on to call the American public “racist.”

“Every time the police have contact with Black people during some bulls–t traffic stop or some jumpy gentrifier calls 911, the prospect of state violence — up to and including deadly force — is on the table. The most direct way to keep Black folks from being killed by cops is to stop those unnecessary encounters. It takes off the table the bias in police imperatives, among individual officers, and among a racist public who use 911 like a customer service Hotline,” he said in August 2020.

Demby responded to one user who said, “We must revoke the powers [the police] enjoyed, we’ve got to change all of the rules, all of it. From the ground up, NO POLICING. We don’t need it.”

“Right, that’s what I’m saying,” Demby responded in August 2020.

“Cops ain’t protecting nobody *now*,” he said in May 2021 to a “who will protect…” hypothetical.

Demby shared his left-wing views on police during the course of his affiliation with the taxpayer-funded NPR. His first byline appeared as early as 2012.

Fox News Digital contacted NPR for comment about the correspondent but did not immediately receive a response.

Demby leads NPR’s Code Switch podcast team, which proclaims to be “the fearless conversations about race that you’ve been waiting for,” according to its website. At NPR, he publishes stories on “whiteness” and “Imagining A World Without Prison.”

His views about defunding the police state are more closely aligned with White Democrats than Black America, according to Pew research.

During the height of the discussion surrounding defunding the police, Pew research showed in 2021 that – by and large – Democratic Black Americans support increased funding for law enforcement – more so than White liberals.

Only 25% of Black Americans polled supported reducing funding, and 36% wanted to keep status quo for police budgets, according to the research.

NPR, more broadly, has reportedly been struggling to connect to an audience, according to a report in the New York Times, which was causing a revenue problem.

“It is grappling with a declining audience and falling revenue — and internal conflict about how to fix it,” Times reporters Benjamin Mullin and Jeremy Peters said.

The Times reporters noted that a “yearslong push to diversify NPR’s staff” hasn’t boosted listeners as much as executives hoped.

The report followed longtime NPR editor Uri Berliner blowing the whistle on alleged liberal bias at the organization with a piece in The Free Press. He ultimately resigned, proclaiming he “cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO whose divisive views confirm the very problems at NPR I cited.”

The story thrust discussions of liberal bias at NPR into the national zeitgeist, and put a focus on CEO Katherine Maher, who has gone viral for past social media posts showing far-left personal views.

On the note of defunding, Republicans have begun to call for NPR to be stripped of taxpayer dollars amid accusations those accusations of liberal bias.

“The government shouldn’t be in the business of funding media, and it certainly shouldn’t be funding media that has a clear bias,” Rep. Bob Good, R-Va., who introduced a bill to defund NPR, said. NPR has had a clear left-wing bias for decades, and it’s just growing by the day. And there’s no reason for taxpayers to have to fund this.”

While most of NPR’s funding comes from corporate sponsorships, according to its site, the nonprofit also benefits both directly and indirectly from federal funds. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which got a fiscal 2026 advance of $535 million in the latest government funding deal, oversees both NPR and the Public Broadcasting Service.
